friend (20 yr. old female COWORKER) did her own install of white gauges on 2002(?) auto V6 convert. I have not seen car. Does anyone have gauge pics w/key off, key on? She says, via email, that Oil/Batt do not respond at all (connector not in or seated?), Temp stays the same from start to full warm, gas seems to be okay(?), speedo slightly high - all her explanations in writing. Earliest I can see car is weekend.

i would say she needs to take it off, make sure all the connectors are in the right place, if that doesnt work, take it to someone that knows the gauges and have them help you out, otherwise i dont think anyone would want to drive w/o knowing the engine temp, etc
I installed my gauges myself, but they were overlays that layed overtop the old ones. And then you connect the power to your main power to your headlights.
I never ran into any problems other than blowing some fuses trying to find which area was the correct headlight switch.
Sorry, not sure i understand what you mean by this.

If you mean car started VS not started, i only have pictures of it not started. I don't know if this will help.
Ok, this really helps for a start - no reason to believe her 2002 is far different than my 96, right?
I see this as:
Gas gauge should show correct all the time (started/not started)
Same w/Temp gauge
Batt guage sits at 2nd mark, not the first mark
Oil guage sits on the pin
One set of instructions I saw indicated there may be a 'preload' of certain gauges against the pins - I believe I'm safe here using my car as a reference.

where does needle sit on Temp guage when car has been sitting for several hrs? Mine sits quite a bit BELOW the C

if she poped the needles off to install the gages she could have put it on wronge. If it was a slide over make sure the overlay is down all the way. I am drunk now so ask me again later.

Foamy

OK, here's the deal: get her a full tank of gas, that way you know that the gas gauge should be at F when the engine is running. Take your time while driving to the gas station, that way the car will warm up. When you are satisfyed that the car is warmed up, the temp gauge should be in the middle with the engine on. The voltmeter and oil pressure will always be in the middle when the engine is on, since they're basically on/off switches. The tach and speedo should be just off the needle when you turn the ignition. The reason the needles might not move is either because they are pushed down too far, or the gauge rod was twisted so far when the needle was put on that it will never go far enough to read. Another reason is that sometimes the gauge overlay comes unstuck and bubbles, making the needle stuck.
I see this as:
Gas gauge should show correct all the time (started/not started)
Same w/Temp gauge
Well the gas gauge should read correctly when the car is off, however the Temp gauge stays where it read last when the car was turned off (If it is warm, hours later it obviously will be more cold)

The needle would be below normal area if it has set for many hours. I think i took the picture after driving, so that explains why it was warm.

All my needles go off when I turn the car off, and mine is an 02. There are stops in the gauges that keep them from going too far down, so you can't just set them at their lowest point when the car is off and expect them to be correct.
i had a problem that was like this one. my problem was that my speedo was off by about 4 MPH. my only thought on how this happens is that the nob the needle connecs to actually drops down underneath the pin that the needle for your speedo rests on. the reason for it not doing so normally is that your needle makes contact with the pin holding it up. Of course thats all in theory. ive yet to fix the problem on account that i have other projects with the car than that but the best way to come close to being acurate is to find a police radar post and drive at it at 30 MPH then place your needle at the 30 mark. this way you may only be off by either + or - 1mph. as radar can not be calibrated perfectly. also you could ask a friend to drive alongside you at say again 30 mph and then place your needle. i have a picture of my speedo before i began construction on my white face gauges. i dont know exactly how to insert a picture on this forrum but if you read this before i figure it out feel free to email me and i will send it to you.
