Default Service Engine Soon

The "Service Engine Soon" light came on a couple days ago. This happened at about 30,000 miles and now again at 63,000.

Last time it was under warranty, so I had the dealer fix it and I don't remember exactly what the problem was - vapor accumulation?

Is this an easy fix with the part? I have access to tools and a lift if necessary.

Is this common in the 2000 Mustangs?

I have a 2000 Mustang Convertable - V6.

Thanks!

It's usually an oxygen sensor . ..

get the ecu checked, but usually the o2 sensors go a lot, so it might be them.

Autozone.....free code check. It'll tell ya exactly what's up.

They're right---the o2 sensor is a typical problem. No sense throwing parts at it, tho, if someone'll check it for free....

Could be anything. Loose spark plug wire or???

They are set to come on at certain milage intervals to remind you to keep emissions semsors up to par.

Without the codes it is impossible to be sure.

Default Code P0402

Got the code read and it was 0402, which points to the EGR valve as the most likely cause. I pulled the valve, cleaned it and applied suction to cycle the valve to ensure that it's still working properly, which it appears to be.

Which sensor? The one that is below and to the side of the EGR valve?

Another issue I'm having with the car is it started running down batteries when I don't drive it for about 5-days. I pulled the alternator and had it checked and it passed. It's putting out about 13.8V consistently. Any ideas where to go next? I noticed that both my reverse lights were out so I pulled the switch mounted on the transmission and it checked out ok on the meter and when we put the switch back in, the lights worked. Possibly the switch is getting stuck in the reverse position? But, doesn't the key need to be on to complete that circuit?

Any thoughts?

And oh yeah, since the battery died this last time, the reverse lights are out again. New bulbs. Fuses ok.

I would check that harness as well as shorting O2 sensors......

BTW, damn, you answered your own question from 5 years ago.

Well look at that, I did reply to the old one. Funny thing is that this happens about every 30K miles and the mechanics say it's not a common problem. I find that hard to believe.
