Default 2000 Auto running rich?

Hi -

I have had my 2000 Stang for a few months now (actually coming up on three). It's running a little rich. It is very high mileage for it's age with 114k miles.

(driven in the boonies!... Highway miles almost exclusivley)

Any possible causes for this? I'm not pleased with having such a great look car and actually dealing with that smell..

I really don't have any idea wether that's affecting my mileage or not or if it's a sign of some future dire problem. I don't know much of anything about cars i'll admit. Any information would be appreciated.

It's running rich?!

You're sure? Where is the smell coming from. Have you run engine diagnostics?

Is there black smoke?

It's pretty difficult for the car to run rich . . .

Sometimes the fuel pressure regulator diaphram will rupture. If you remove the vaccum hose on the regulator and liquid fuel comes out then the diaphram is bad. With 114k miles you could also have other problems. Look at the basics first; air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs and wires, tire pressures and transmission . You could also have "lazy" oxygen sensors, when O2 sensors get old they don't function as well as when they were new. Sometimes a code will be set if one sensor is switching slower then the other, but if both are switching slower then new codes are normally not set. What is your mileage? I get around 22-24 mpg with my 94 V6 manual trans Mustang, with a mix of city and highway driving.

16 mpg is bad Does it smell like rotten eggs or is sweet smelling. If smells like rotten eggs then your engine is probably running excessively rich, like a bad fuel pressure regulator. If it smells sweet it could be a bad head gasket or the intake gasket. The intake gasket can leak both coolant into the intake ports and also leak vacuum. I'd have to say as a Ford tech take your car to a Ford dealer as we are best capable of finding driveability faults then a Pep Boys or an independent garage.

I'd say there's NO WAY you're running rich with a sweet smell, and smelling it with the window DOWN while driving.

You may have a leak . . .

Did you check the oil?
