Default 84 3.8l hesitates

i have an 84 thunderbird with a 3.8l now and most of the time when ever i start to accelerate it hesitates a bit. the hesitation isnt that bad and doest seem to do it when i give it more than half throtle. the guy i bought the car from said that it was a sensor but he didnt know which one. does anyone have any clue as to what sensor it could be? one of the sensors it could be is on the intake manifold if that helps.
thanks

Just try to act cool, like you can even relate, Looking up at the taillights as they get smaller, The driver backs off just to give me a holler, "You can't win them all," he says in fling, "You may not win any, in that silly thing," I smiled and revved as he pulled out of sight, With my new mods tomorrow…it will be a better night.

Your car is 20 years old and my memory is foggy about the cars way back then. I'm not sure about this but I think your 3.8 may have still have a carburetor on it. I know the '83 models did but I don't know in what year they went to throttle body fuel injection. I had an '86 LTD that had a 3.8 with throttle body injection. If it has a carburetor the most likely cause of a hesitation is a bad accelorator pump. If its throttle body it could be a bad sensor but which one is anyones guess. MAP sensor Throttle position sensor who knows. Get it scanned to eliminate the guess work.

Try cleaning your MAF with electric contact cleaner first.

If it is fuel injected it does not have a mass air flow sensor. The EFI from that era was throttle body injection not sequential multi port like we have today. Throttle body EFI was essentially the throttle body of a 2 barrel carb with two injector nozzles that sparyed into the throats from above. The cars even had an intake manifold and air cleaner assembly that looked like one from a carbureted engine. There were a multitude of sensors that monitored crankshaft position, coolant temperature, ambiant air temperature, manifold pressure, and throttle position. All this fed into a computer to tell the system how much fuel to feed the engine. This EFI system was closer to a carbureted engine from the past than it is to the EFI systems that we have now.

Ah, just a wild guess - that car's way before my time.

Ahhh! a carbbed car . . .

You've cleaned the Carb?

Next would be the Cap, rotor & spark plugs, after that start looking for vacuum leaks.
