Default Friends keep telling me to get a stick

I have an automatic 2000. And all my friends say i should get rid of it and get a stick. So, how much do you think it would cost to swap an auto for a stick? including labor. and is there any difference between the t-45 and the t-5 tremec transmission?

I wouldn't do it. It's too much work. If you want a stick, just get a different car.

Mana is right. doing the swap isn't easy. But if you were to swap it, I would look at the BW T-46 6-spd tranny.

nah, the 6 speed is too much of a torque drain. You need BIG power to run those gears.

I did the swap in a 92 coupe once. Take your time, shop around and you can piece it together pretty cheap. It took me 14 hours to do it by myself, without a lift. Dont let anyone tell you that you cant do it.
Consider this first though. 4.10 gears, and a higher stall stall convertor. Around 3000 rpm stall, with the gear, and you will beat your friends 5 speeds, and be more consistant.

too much time and work for what it's worth.
If you don't plan on keeping the car forever or super duper long time, just might as well trade it in for something else that has a manual tranny.

Wrong the swap is easy. The only thing you have to do is shave down the tunnel a bit the whole thing trans mounts bolt up then all you need is a clutch kit. trans will cost about 600 Plus a kit 1000 and if you dont want to do it yourself I say another 1000-1200 for labor.

I dont plan on doing it. I was gonna pay someone to do it. My tranny is about 5 yrs old and i figure its gonna break any time now. Thats why i'm asking. Im willing to spend up to $2000 on a manual.

well in theory it is worth it. because if your automatic goes this is what you're going to pay. 1200 for the automatic trans from ford and another 1200 to install it. Ford takes their time I put my automatic trans in my car in 9 hours. After finding out it was the wrong trans ford gave me it took ford 8 days to put it in. So you buy the remanufactured manual trans get a decent clutch kit, stock or say king cobra and have some nice place drop in the trans and do some custom work for about 1000-1200 you're still paying 2400 or perhaps lil less. so I say that if you want 5 speed in your car wait for the automatic to go and do the manual swap. I hear that the car is never the same after the swap is made it fells choppy, that i feel has to be tainted becausde our cars come in manual. but ask GTraptor he did the swap and ask him if it feels choppy

I asked a mechanic years back about switching my 1990 Ford Probe over to a 5-speed from automatic and he looked at me like i was crazy. Definitely too much work. Better off selling the car and buying a 5-speed version

Perhaps a Ford Probe is different.

But lets go over it.

You need a Manual trans 600 Bucks. ( you can find a decent one in a parting out car for liek 200)

You need a clutch kit 200-400 bucks.( like wise with parting out for liek 50 bucks)

manual driveshaft - 120 get an aluminum one , save some weight in the process. ( can pull a reg driveshaft off a parting out car for liek 20-50 bucks too)

Just saved a lot of money there.

Now all you have to do is set up the clutch kit drop out the auto.
(anyone can do this you basically need a lift and time.)

Then I believe at least on my modelt hat the trans tunnel needs to be shaven down a bit.

Then the manual trans goes in all the mounts bolt right up nothing changes. then all should be hooked. of course it's a lil more but then you can buy the pieces and have a good trans guy pop it in for you for 65 an hour

Give him 18 hours to do the custom work like shaving and setting up the clutch cost about 1200.

So you spent roughly 2400-2500.

an automatic trans cost 1200 and 1200 to install.
