I drive an '00 v6 automatic and I have only put on a flowmasters exhaust system, the rest is stock. I am getting 15 MPG consistantly. When I accelerate i keep it at 2000 RPM's or lower, how many MPG do you people get? I am wondering if mine is low. If I am running low MPG, how can I fix it?
This question will be answered differently depending on where you live. When I go home to Minneapolis/St.Paul and get stuck in traffic or get caught in medium to heavy traffic, I see my MPG being low. When I go back to school in Fargo where there is hardly any traffic jams, my fuel efficiency goest up to 20 MPG (fairly close to it) when I don't push it. One of the sticky threads is about" hopefully the ultimate answer to "why is my mileage bad?""
Also, I would check your tire inflation which is one of the biggest fuel blowers.
i think i might be getting roughly the same mpg, but i drive hard as hell. maybe you could run some injector cleaner, synthetic oil and check your airfilter...aside from tire press as stated. those things will help your mpg.
I run 496 miles on 14 gallons. that's a round trip to topeka -35.43 MPG.

My 94 V6 manual trans gives me 23mpg combined highway/city driving in summer and 21 in winter. At 15mpg your engine is running very rich. Check the basic stuff first i.e; Tire pressure, air filter, dragging brakes, heavy loads, is the trans going into overdrive, worn spark plugs. More advance stuff includes, lazy O2 sensors, camshaft sensor timing, short and long fuel trims, etc. Any competent Ford tech should be able to find the problem has something to do with the advance stuff. P.S. Do you know which rear gear ratio you have? If its a 2.73 ratio you may be able to improve the mileage by going with a 3.27 ratio. I installed a 3.27 in my car and the mileage didn't change, but it drives alot better. The engine doesn't work as hard to keep the car moving along and acceleration improves.
the thing to remember is that in a long trip, you are going to get your best MPG.
Heck I got 32 MPG in my 5.0L in a trip from Orlando to the SC border. I drove 80 MPH on cruise control the whole way. 320 miles.
Now when you slow down and speed up, that is where you can lose you fuel efficencey.
I normally get 320 miles on 14 gallons of gas. Granted I have a 5.0 but it depends on your driving style.
Tire inflation is critical, if you use your cruise control a lot (I use it on my way into work the whole way)
Now as for gearing, not sure what the effect it, I thought the higher your gear the better your MPG were. But I am not sure on that. I run the stock 2.73 gears. Now the only other thing I have that isn't stock is my K&N filter. Heck I still run the air silencer!
lol you wish, your math is FAR off or you are just gestimating lol
nope, I have to keep precise records for the IRS.
I'm running underdrivers, and CAI, with tire inflation set to 51psi. Cruise the whole way at 65 mph, with several sections at 60mph.
I generally get a 15-20mph tailwind on the way back.

Hey Coyote---51psi?? I commute a fast 100 mile round trip everday and have been wonderin about my tire pressure---whats the theory, how does 51psi affect handling or wear?

I have aftermarket tires. max recommended on the Dunlops are 51psi.
the max pressure reduces friction and heating of the compound from squirm. it also maintains a flat surface for better handling, and properly inflated tires live much longer than underinflated tires (remember the Explorer fiasco?)
I think the max for OEM tires was 44psi.
Generally thi higher the speed rating the higher the psi needed for the tire. The Dunlops are WR rated, OEM was HR, I think . ..
I also run synthetics, which will generally get you a couple of MPGs, and I don't have a lot of heavy extras, like leather, ABS, traction control, amps, or subwoofers.
I am running a 42% reduced crank pulley, which makes the car much more efficient, meaning it makes more power at any given RPM, making the car work less to achieve or maintain speed.
Lastly, I am running a CAI which has the same virtues.
simple rules are:
less weight= better mileage (roughly every 200lbs=1mpg) my car weighs around 3100 lbs. (I just took out my spare, which will get me a couple of more ticks).
proper tire inflation = better mileage (sometimes as much as 5%) at 27 mpg, that's 1.8 mpg better than factory recommended psi (Ford recommends 35psi for ride comfort).
increased efficiency = better mileage. synthetics are generally good for 2mpg, or more, K&N filters breathe MUCH better than paper elements, which get's you much better mileage. and the UD pulleys are good for a number of ticks on the MPG meter.
