Exclamation Central fuel injection problems

I have an 86 Mustang LX with the 3.8L V6. The car will start up and idle, but when you press on the gas it boggs and kills. I changed the fuel pump and that made no change. I'm thinking maybe fuel press regulator? Any ideas? Could it maybe be the throttle postion sensor? Or maybe the MAP sensor? I am stumped I know it's something simple, but I can't figure it out. Also since Ford uses non standard parts I can't put my fuel press gauge on it either because the fitting is smaller than normal. Help!

Pull the plugs and figure out if your running rich or lean .

My guess is an EGR valve needs to be replaced.

It happened on an old car I had in college.

Default Problems

EGR's are for people whom care about how much emissions they put into the air. I dont have an egr and I dont have a problem with mine. It sounds like to me you might have to get your hands dirty on this one. First I would check everything minor before digging deeper into the pot and trying to steal a quick fix. Sounds like you may have a clogged fuel line or injector or quick possible your TPS might be bad. it is an '86 and almost a classic (in 2006). Start checking everything, pull the spark wires and plugs and make sure your just not running on 3 cylinders or you have a clogged fuel filter, your car is carbed right...........if so the guess what, that has to come off as well, check everything I had a similar problem when I had my '78 mustang as well as my '90 LX.

Sorry, but you have no idea the purpose of the EGR system in a modern engine.

Lucky for you the computer in your system can overcome your shortcomings.

How the EGR works.

IMHO, a bad EGR valve would not show the symptoms you describe.

Lucky for me my EGR is turned off from the EEC. And considering in a mustang it takes partial exhaust from the passenger side headger through the Pumps and throws is back into the Lower intake for reburn. Its a endless cycle that is a waste of air displacement in my books, but hey what do I know, right!

But it also cools the combustion chamber and helps prevent detonation......but, hey, what do I know?

Depends on the year and setup.

Damn that hot air cooling method!!! And you dont have to really worry about detonation in a V6 to much
