I only got one key with my '02 Mustang. This morning I locked the key in the car with the engine running for the second time. It's time to get another key. I checked with the dealer and it's going to be over $70 to get a new key and get it programed.
Here is the question. How do they program the key? Is this something that anyone can do if they follow the right instructions, or do you have to have special equipment to do it? I have seen instructions where you put in the key that you have and turn it on, then remove that key and insert the new key and turn it on within 15 second and it will program the new key. Is this just something that someone made up or does it actually work?
I did a search and didn't get a complete answer for what I was looking for. If any Ford mechanics can explain how it's done I'd appreciate it.
OK, thanks for the reply. I got a new key today but didn't get it programed. I'll take it in sometime and spend the $48 to get it programed. I'm going to get another fob for it too. At least for now I can get the door open if I lock the keys in it again.
