Default Fuel filter replacement

I'm about to replace the fuel filter on my 98 3.8 V6. I took a look under the car & it seems to be a simple case of pulling the rubber hose from either side of the fuel filter, BUT...........
1. There are a couple of flimsy plastic 'retaining' clips on the outside of the hose (both sides of the filter), what purpose do these serve???
2. I have read somewhere that you need to release fuel pressure, will opening the fuel filler cap & clamping the tank side fuel filter hose suffice??
3. If the answer to Q2 is no, what is the procedure???

Thanks
Pete

I don't know when that kicked in . . . I'd do it in any case.

Best bet is to pick up a chilton's or haynes manual, or copy some pages from those or the Ford Service Manual at your library.

Or you can shoot mustangtk a PM.

There's another thread on the fuel filter in the archives, too . ..

all you need to do is let it sit a few hours and it wont have pressure in the lines.......iv never released the pressure. and for the filter just use a screw driver and pry the plasic retainers out and pull the lines off

Get your owner's manual out and look at which fuse serves the electric fuel pump. Pull the fuse, crank the engine and let it run until it quits. That should empty all of the fuel in the lines.
