I have one of them cheap eBay CAI . It didn`t fit worth a crap and I had to trim it to size . It also makes this sucking noise that .... well sucks . The only reason I am keeping it on my car right now is because it looks kewl , how sad is that ! I do see myself putting back the ford air box with a K&N filter at some point in time . Also , now it is more of a hassle to clean my filter . Now I have to rip apart the CAI as so I can get to the filter in the fender well . But It do look kewl

exactly. :thumbsup they are good for NOTHING else.
mustang dewd3.8- cooler air is more dense (compact). so the cooler the air is, the more that can be pushed into the engine. warm air is useless. either keep your factory setup with a K&N and the silencer removed or go with a plastic kit. ALL THE OTHERS ARE USELESS!!!!!!
Badass98svt - I think you missed my logic. But that's alright I won't get mad.
To clear things up... I know what the point of cooler air is. thanks for stating the obvious.
My logic is this you have an Air Box that sits in the engine bay, with a filter sweating in it. then you have thick ridgid plastic piping sitting in the engine bay as well. removing the air silencer (IE the piece that sucks in air from a cooler part of the car into the air box and replacing the filter with something less restrictive, will not show any at all gains. Logically... the aitbox itself heats up plenty where warm air will just sit, hence less dense hence less power ( see I know these things too ) then you have your warm plastic piping with ridgid that catches wam air and keeps it in the pipe. ( now was stated by KS coyote. the piping on the CAI ((Metal)) is smaller so the amount of air that goes through is the same) but that's not the point I was trying to make. the Metal pipes are smoother hence no Caught air to warm up and sit. So now you have a warm air box, a less restrictive filter, and a warm pipe with wamr air stuck in it making coolish air passing through even more warmer than just flying through into your engine... derr. hence less dense = less power.
The way i see it. Smoother piping holding less warm air and a filter that sits in the fenderwell in an obviously cooler area of the engine with also a less restricting filter would obviousl shoot cooler air in through quicker without warming up too much before it hits the throttle body. Put on like a latex glove and blow air through your warm hand and feel the warmth on the other side. Now get a smaller cylindrical device and wrap your hand around it making it warm... and feel the air on the other side. the ridges and warmth of your hand will keep the air warm when the cmoother cylinder will pass the air much quicker and less contimated by warmth LOGIC
NO the gains wont be big. but if you out up an equally warm object with ridges and same air passage, with a less restricting filter is all you have a warm box filter tubing AIR .. the CAI will be cooler. Im sorry.
Now if you get an aftermarket plastic CAI that would cheeper than doing a stock intake with just a less restricting filter.(IMO this is the best way to go.) ( which can be built by yourself with PVC pipe as Lcurle stated) ... (kinda like the potato gun my friends and I made ^^)
Saying the a metal CAI shows no increase because it gets warmer is just silly, it's like as if you were saying plastic doesnt get warm. yeah you wont get much gain from the metal of the plastic but there is gains to be een. I think we're getting too carried away with nothing works anymore. don't you all think?
but if you look at it really the metal set ups (not the piping) should pull in cooler air, due to plaement of filter and smoother internal linging. (just as quick with less resistence and cooler location... how is that not a gain. the only cons are that it's expensive. and heavy compared tot he stock system.
I hesitated posting because my experience doesn't seem to jive with everyone elses. I also have the ebay cai. The other day I drove for about an hour most at highway speeds then some at city speeds. I stopped at the store at for fun checked under the hood with the engine running. I felt the cold air pipe by the fender and it was cold. Put my hand before the tb and it was cool but not as cold. I then placed my hand on the plenum and it was warm. To me the cold air seems to be just that cold air. This story is true and I know that outside temperature contributes greatly. And you probable would not be able to tell in the summer. But there it is my 2 cents.

The effect grows by ambient temperature.
The warmer the air outside, the more quickly the metal heats up. THe differences won't be apparent until outside temps reach 85 degrees or more on the track or in the dyno room.
Dewd is correct re: velocity in the stock intake system. but that's one of the reasons the stock system is so large.
dyno tests with just the K&N filter and the stock intake consistently test at 5 hp.
Dyno tests on metal CAI consistently test at 5-7 hp. so you're paying 30 dollars or more for two hp.
Plastic CAIs consistently test between 8-12 hp over stock. when the ambient temp is cold, you'll get 1 hp over the metal (mainly due to volume). but the warmer the ambient temp. the wider the gap becomes.

I keep tellin you guys and it may sounds dumb but PVC is cheap and does more then chrome CAI. I have a crome and that son of a biscuit gets hot. Im working on the PVC version with all the same attachments just 105MM in Diameter. Sure it may look like Im flushing a load into my intake but I see some PVC and I want it painted black.........silly stones. Need you input on what yall think about the PVC idea before I spend the $20 for pipe and beer.

the DeMolet DenseCharger is PVC pipe.
It will work, and if yours is configured a little differently, you can sell yours, too.
You just need a patent on your design.
the cost of the materials is usually 10-20% of a product. Labor is usually around 25%, with marketingstorage and taxes making up the rest.
So 20 bucks is about right.
say it takes you an hour to make one. That's 30 dollars. So the total cost is 50. you now have a product worth $50, add taxes because you have inventory. So it's $60.
now you've got to market it, that'll cost you probably 30-100 dollars depending on where you put your ads, and whatever kind of traveling you have to do.
so your product now costs between 90-160 dollars. then you've got to rent some kind of storage space to hold the products, which can ad up.
So you can absolutely make your own CAI out of PVC for a lot cheaper than buying one .. .

Cue the Rolling Stone, "I see a CAI and I want it painted black" I was thinking hot bright pink with butterflies on it... how ghey would that be when you pop your hood and barbie is sitting on your CAI looking back at ya.
Project on hold for now, picked up some more hours at work so, looks like middle of the week sometime here are the stats I have for it so far:
105MM straight through fenderwell to Throttle body with the MAS built into the tube. Just disconnect from OEM MAS and snap it into the straight-flowpipe(T).
Optional Ram Air attachment for semi-forced induction.
Over all cost for the consumer: $100 w/o filter. Shipping $10 CONUS

You can find it on E-bay for 150, but when you factor in shipping it's usually around 170, I think.
Check out E-bay Stores.

I didn't want to start a new thread since this one is talking about what I'm about to ask. I know I want the plastic intake. My questions is who has the cheapest price on a K&N FIPK. There is one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=38634 for $205 w/ shipping.
