Question Exhuast Questions and More...

I'm still a teenager and just got my first Mustang. It is a '99 V6 automatic. I am wanting to do some stuff to it to make it look like my own (rims, body kits, etc.) and add some under the hood and hopefully gain some HP, torque, the like. My first question...I have heard soundbites of exhaust and I really like the SLP Loudmouth system: http://www.lmperformance.com/3513/50.html. However, this system is for a V8. I was wondering if anyone knows where to find a system that is the same or very similar for a V6. It does not have to be from SLP, I just want something that sounds good and also adds something to performance but doesn't cost a whole lot of money. My other question is that I've heard a lot of talk about cold air intake and I know that it gives more air to the engine (I think...) but I am just wondering what its purpose is and what it adds.

Thank you for any help!!!

You can use the SLP exhaust on your V6, as long as you get the Adapter pipe that turns your car from single exhaust back to duals. Secondly, the Cold Air INtake brings more cold air into your engine. The colder the air, the more fuel is dumped in for the air fuel ration the more HP you get.

For the adapter on the exhaust check out pacesetter, and you will also need a set of passenger side hangers for the exhaust.

Thanks. So I can use that same V8 exhaust on my V6 as long as I turn it from single to dual exhaust (just making sure I understood correctly)? What does it take to get that adapter pipe and how much does it cost? Is pacesetter a website (pacesetter.com ?) and how much does that stuff cost? Sorry for so many questions I'm just really excited to be able to do stuff to my car! Thanks for any more knowledge you can pass on!!!

Yes you need the pacesetter adapters to do the conversion unless you want to get an exhuast shop to custom bend and cut some pipes to fit after the cats straight back. I think LRS has on @ www.50resto.com roughly coupld hundred for the pipe. a set og hangers and all the mounting hardware can be found there as well. I think $59 for the mounting kit then the price of the exhaust and your set.

Question

OK. So now, what exactly are the pacesetter adapters and the hangers? Is that couple hundred you talked about after the actual exhaust from www.lmperformance.com is bought? What is the pipe that you are talking about that is a couple hundred? And also what is LRS? If that exhaust is about $360 then how much will the whole project be with everything you are talking about? And will I need someone to install it for me? You know a lot more about this than I do ( ) lol. So anything that you could say to make it easier to understand would be great. Sorry if I'm getting annoying with all these questions, I just don't want to buy that exhaust and not have it work and I want to know what else I need to buy. Thanks again! I hope for a reply soon!

The adapter kit can be found here http://www.pacesetterexhaust.com/mustang.htm part #
82-2921. $129.99 for that adapter kit.
Your kit should come with the hangers needed for the install, I didnt think about that.
I was just looking at www.lmperformance.com and you can get everything you need from that one site.
Pace Setter Hi Flow Cat 2.5" 3.8L max P800026 $139.99
SLP Loudmouth II Exhaust, Loud Mouth II 99-04 Mustang GT/MACH 1 M31007A $359.96
If it doesnt come with the hangers you can go to a local shop and pick them up for about $10. Total cost is roughly: 499.97+ shipping.
You can do it yourself, but it might be more of a pain in the ass then you realize trying to manouver the pipes around and get them into place. It can be done just depends on your patience level.

Thanks! I looked at all that stuff on www.lmperformance.com and found it all easily. Now just a few more questions and I'll be finished. What kind of places do installation and how much would it cost? Also, what would it take to install it myself or with my dad (like would we have to know a lot about cars or could we pick it up pretty easy?)? And about the rear bumper, I heard I could drop it down (my bumper doesn't have dual slots) so it could be seen with my bumper and then move it again if I got a body kit? And last but not least...if I just took everything still in the box to a place to get it installed, would they know what to do with it all? Sorry if I'm getting annoying, I just want to have it all right. Thanks again!

Alot of places do exhaust work, I dont know if your in a big town or small town. I got mine done at a Monroe brake and muffler. They may charge a little for the installation per hour. Going rate here is $70/hr and it may roughly take a few hours. To do it yourself you would need a mig welder or any type of welder to seal up the joints where the old exhaust would be cut. A metal cutter (plasma torch or cut off wheel) to cut the old ehaust off. Stands for the exhaust to rest on so you can get it lined up correctly. And yes the exhaust will sit right underneath your rear bumper. Which I find isnt a big deal but some people want to look like the GT, I just dont care. If you do get the body kit with the GT cutouts, all you do is loosen the mufflers and move the pipe up into the slots and hold in place, then tighten and voila! I find it is best practice if you are taking your kit somewhere to get it installed to run them through what has to happen prior to setting them loose on it. Also if you cannot see them work, mark the exhaust some how, by a black marker on the inside of the tips to make sure they actually used your stuff instead of something cheaper in their shop.

I don't have any of those things I need (not to mention the knowledge), so it looks like I'll be getting it installed somewhere. My town is pretty big (the biggest in KS) with like 300,000 people (I think), so would it be pretty easy to find a shop specializing in exhaust? Actually, my dad's friend works at a pretty big car lot, would the mechanics there be able to put it on? And you said that I should go over with them what needs to be done...what do I need to tell them? I wouldn't know exactly what to say to just explain everything. Last thing, I saw on another post's pictures that a guy had slits cut out of his V6 bumper to make it look like a GT, is the expensive? Easy? Thanks again, you've been a huge help on this whole process. I bet you can't wait until I know everything so I will stop asking you questions! Thanks!

Wait a second.....your in Kansas??? thats where the other half of SVR Racing is located as well as our shop. Well damn, if you want to I cal call Carlos and see if he will do the install for you. He has all the stuff and will more then likely do it for alot less then other exhaust places. He lives in Newton and drives a 740 Volvo Station Wagon. You may have seen him around, yeah its a fast little brick. Let me know if you want me to pursue this. I may be moving up to Newton here in the next little bit to get our shop off the ground. We specialize in Mustangs and Volvos aftermarket and custom fabrication.

Let me know!

Make sure they install a pair of reducers, unless you're using a power adder.

You're going to lose a lot of low end tq running the loudmouth, so you'll want at least a 2" reducer pipe and 2.25" at the most.

If you decide you want a power adder, you can uninstall the reducers, and you're set.

Have you had a dyno session?

I'm betting your launch RPM is sufficiently high, you don't notice it . .. and given that you rev to above 6,000 RPM, you're better able to take advantage of the better exhaust breathing.

But I've never seen a dyno that didn't show a significant reduction in torque off the line with larger than 2.25 pipes.
