OK, first time in the V-6 tech. Just bought my daughter a 98 and the seepdo isn't working. Haven't gotten into it yet to see if its a simple fix. Question is, in the 98 is it a cable or does the seeped run off the computer? If its a cable, how hard is it to replace. I am quessing its cable driven due to the fact that autozone carries the cable for 16 bucks.

I don't remember when it switched. If I get a chance, I'll look it up in my Haynes manual .. .

I believe 96 was the last year to use a speedo gear in the transmition that went to through a couple other things till it got to your speedometer. The easiest way to check is to look under the drivers side of your tranny. The gear housing is easly noticable and is closer to your torque converter. If it has that then either the gear or the speedo sensor that is also attached to that gear needs to be replace. If you car does not have that than it is computer controlled. Have you checked to see if you have any blown fuses? I lost my speedo when my 94 mustang got broke into and my radio was stolen. Some how when the cd player was ripped out it sent a voltage to my fuse box under the steering wheel and blew a fuse. Check that first. You owners manual should have it listed.
OK I'm back, definately cable driven. But I noticed that the odometer is working fine. I saw another post that was reverse from my problem. Can the speedo go out and the odometer still work? Small gear in speedo? Replaceable? Please help, I'm turning the car over to her in a couple weeks and don't want any excuses for a ticket!!!

I wouldn't run out and get a new speedo cable. Mustangs are notorious for this when they get 100K+ mileage.
This happened to my 97 Mustang a week ago. Everything works EXCEPT the odometer and the trip odometer. The dealer says I need to replace the entire cluster, because the gears for the odometer broke. They said the plastic they're made of tends to get brittle and eventually break. The dealer wanted over $500 for the cluster.
I just ordered a cluster for a salvage dealer that Autozone works with, EverDrive, for $118.88 to include shipping to my house. It has a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty and takes about 5 business days to get delivered. The number on my receipt for them is 877-827-1188.
If you're not interested in that, then i have 2 other sites listed below for you.
