Re: choosing the right part - Truth v.s. internet chatter
Just a quick note:
When you ask about which part is better, there is usually no obvious choice, and most of us will give you a number of choices. With VERY FEW exceptions, there is no obviously superior part.
On some sites, you see a group of people bagging on manufacturer "X" and claiming Manufacturer "Y" is the best out there.
It's a bunch of BS.
Once you check out the people behind the claim, you find out they're sponsored and PAID to slam other manufacturers parts.
I've seen a number of sponsored folks, for example slamming Kenny Brown and claiming Manufacturer X is superior. Of course they're sponsored.
They point to a race series that is exclusively domestic manufacturers, and Kenny races successfully against exotics, -for a while in a 4.2L OHV Pushrod V6 car. He did this using the IRS that certain manufacturers claim is junk compared to their stuff -it's all baloney -It's because they don't want to work on an IRS system.
Different systems for different races against different competition.
ALL the competitors in the Domestic Series run Stick Axles, so there's no comparison. No matter how many races you win in THAT series.
**********************************
I don't have a sponsorship, and don't want a sponsorship (well, that's not exactly true -I already have two jobs, and don't need another that requires me to travel any more than the 40,000 miles a year I already do).
All parts have different functions, some for show and some for go. If someone tells you there is ONLY ONE part for you, check out who's sponsoring him to say it, or who sponsored the guy who told him that there was only ONE PART for him. You can usually track it down to a sponsorship.
Building a car requires work and focus. You need to have a clear picture of what you want, and then you'll know how to get it there. No one can tell you which parts will work better than others without that goal in mind. And even then there are often several different ways of getting there, and the difference is going to be in your individual choices.
So no matter what WE say, you're still going to have to do your homework, listen to a LOT of people, and take everything with a grain of salt.
Then make your OWN choice.
Just a bit o' sanity, I'm hoping -in a crazy world.

Thats very good advice Kscoyote, and I know for a fact that all of us often forget to do our own homework when we are seeking knowledge.
I guess the thing that I really like about this forum is not so much the "hey guys, whats the best part out there?", its the "has anyone ever had experience with this?" that is most helpful to me.

That's definitely the way I feel about it! I see a lot of folks on here that are serious enthusiasts about building hot cars and racing...I just want to have a car that sounds and looks good! I don't need to outrun anybody! This is a great forum, I've learned lots. Thanks!
Check out the back page of the new Mustang Enthusiast. It's got some good points re: internet advice.
It's also got a pretty good letter re: the six in the letters section.
