Default First easy to install mods

What would you suggest for the first mods to do on a stock 97?

my goal is to beat at least the GT of the same year.

Easiest is to swap a 4.2L long block.

The best you're going to get from a 97 without major porting and polishing or a power adder is around 170.

What's your budget?

I didn't mention it because of import duties, but perhaps you have f-150s in the UAE?

If so, you can swap the 4.2L engine in -it looks just like a 3.8L block only the intake is different, and you'd have to use your mustang intake manifold.

Or you can swap a new rotating assembly into your 3.8L (Crank, rods, pushrods and pistons).

How much would the 4.2l longblock cost? And where would be a good place to find one?

Either a rebuilder or a salvage yard.

At salvage yards, they're running $75-$400 depending on the miles. A low mileage engine is usually around $400.

Rebuilders vary according to the parts they use, and labor rates. A warrantied rebuilt one from Ford should be around $1700, so I'd reckon it should cost from $900-$1500.
