Default Drive Train Differential

What is the difference in a Posi Traction-Limited Slip and a Locking Differential?

Locking differenitals are only suitable for off road or straight racing applications.

A locking differential will not allow you to turn, as both wheels, when locked must turn at the same rate.

I found both Limited Slip and Locking Detroit Lockers Differential on National DriveTrain Inc. It said that the Locking Differential would keep the wheels locked together, and let the faster wheel disconnect in a turn. I thought that was what Limited Slip was suppose to do?

a true locking rear end has a pair of built in rachets that lock both axles together for maximum rotaition, and is a race only rear end. A limited slip differential is designed for street use and is about 85% the same as a locker, the diffference is that the LSD uses a set of clutch packs simular to an auto transmision.

The Detriot Locker is a clutch plateless limited slip differential. It's not a locked differential.

I was wondering, because they had them under 2 separate sections. Under the positraction section it said that limited slips acts as open differential under normal driving condition, how can that be?

The same way your AC is not on even though the wheel on the compressor is spinning.

Or your car idles in first while you have the clutch engaged.

When the rpm differentiates between teh two wheels at a certain point, the clutch engages and the slip is eliminated.

Which one would be better?, Auburn Positraction or Detroit Lockers? Would either one of them make the car harder to turn in corner?

Auburn doesn't make a 7.5" unit. -unless they've come out with one recently.

your choices are probably limited to a Detriot Locker or the Ford Racing units. -

no, because it's an open differential until one of the wheels spins.

It was standard in the SVO. I had one on my 68.

Detroit Locker sells several different models, and the "race-only" have different lock up parameters.

the one for the 7.5 is a dual use model.
