2001 Mustang V6 Gas cap and service engine soon light on again!
Ok my girlfriends car is a 2001 mustang v6 with about 40k on motor. I solved the ticking problem thanks to another helpfull member. Now the gas cap light comes on and the service engine soon light comes on. Both come on at about the same time. Its come on for about the 4th time, I pull the code and clear the codes each time. The code is major leak from evap. system and gas cap loose or leaking. I replace the gas cap with a new one the last time and the warning lights still came on. Any ideas what the problem could be? bad check valve or something? I figure one of the warning lights is triggering the other. The first light that comes on is the gas cap followed by the service engine soon light. I appreciate any input. Thanks...!!

kscoyote, so where do you think I should start looking? Thanks again...!!
That whole system is a mystery to me. It seems to change every couple of years. but the check valve "should" be located around the cap, but "could" be located in an access panel via the trunk.
I've never had to mess with it, except on my Fiero but that was before the returnless system.

Anyone have a diagram of the fuel system on the 3.8 that they can email me or post? I'm still trying to locate the leak. Email is Jspecrx7@hotmail.com. Thanks...!!
Do you have a good seal on the fuel filter? When I first bought mine, the CEL went on the first week so I took it back to the dealer and the code that came up was the same you have. They replaced it, and made sure the connections were tight.
Evap leak codes are the most common cause of the MIL light coming on. Usually due to loose gas caps or filling up at the gas station while the car is running. The only true way to diagnose is to follow a flowchart for the code involved. If you have access to an a/c freon sniffer it can be used to find external leaks. The only way to check evap purge or vent valves is with a flowchart. I have also seen many purge/vent valves going bad due to overfilling gas tanks. We all do it we try to get a few extra clicks to round up to the next dollar. This recirculates gas into the evap system saturating the charcoal canister. Once this happens the charcoal degrades and during the purge cycles pieces of the charcoal can get sucked into the purge or vent valves and damage them. Another hint check the charcoal canister for cracks its very easy to hit on a curb depending on where yours is and this could be the source of your leak. Good Luck!!!

This charcoal canister is located in the drivers side rear wheel well, right?

It differs from model year and engine combination. Most engine bays have an emissions sticker with vacuum diagrams on them use this to find possible components and routings.

is it code P1443?? it's a common code that seemingly no one online 9or anyone else for that matter, even the dealerships) knows about. I got this code a few months back, did some research and found out what it was. if you have this code, I can take some pictures and hopefully that'll help. I drive a 96 though so I dont know if the codes or the components are the same or not.
