Ok, now for the next question - what's your budget?

(the question after that is going to be -what's your mechanical ability?)

Ok, best bet is to either purchase an entire used 4.2L and swap it in (should be $400 or so for a low mileage unit at a salvage yard). or swap the heads and intake from a 99+ 3.8L.

the 3.8L and the 4.2L have the same block and are externally the same. the intake manifolds ARE different, though, and the 99+ engines are internally balanced, while the pre-99 engines are externally balanced which will require a bit of modification to mate with the transmission.

you could easily hit 220 rwhp, depending on the quality of the port/polish job -BUT you're going to have to do not only the heads but the intakes as well -upper and lower.

I don't know what machine shops charge in your area, but if your goal is 200 whp on the cheap, the swap would be the cheapest.

porting/polishing the heads generally costs as much as an entire engine. If you picked up the 4.2L for $400, you could STILL do the p&p on the heads, and still have a ton of money left over.

You can always rent one at Hertz for a day.

But! if installing it would be a problem, doing the P&P on heads, upper and lower intakes would probably take your entire budget . . . and you'd have to swap the cam to hit your goals . ..

so then the a motor swap would be the way to go. i suppose it could be done. and if i could get the car and engine to the school, i could have the automotive class install it for free(maybe). And for $400, i would have money left to put into the 4.2.

will the stock tranny match witha 4.2?

also are 4.10's really as helpful as people claim?

I do a lot of highway driving, and like being in the powerband at highway speeds. the 4.2L has plently of torque, so the torque multiplication will just make for gross displays of power at low rpms.

but whatever floats your boat -I go conservative with gears, but I live at higher speeds than most drivers.

you should be able to get both to the school, just rent a truck for a day, pick it up and drop it off, check it out, and when you're ready, drop it in.

PM GT-EATER or Pinto re: changes for the balance to install the tranny . ..

I'm taking automotive class next year in college... i guess this is a possiblily for me as well. Of course coyote we already talked about that, problem is i only have 30,000 miles on mine, so im sure any 4.2 would have at least twice as much.
