Default Is $250 to much to pay for Tune-Up?

Hola everybody,

I am new to the mustang world. I recently purchased a 35th Anniversary yellow stang, V6 of course, 5spd. The car has 106k miles and runs okay, I want to get a tune-up and I checked at Pep boys and other places and they want from $200-$250 for a tune-up which includes wires, plugs, and labor cost.. Does this seem like alot of money? I also am getting not to good gas mileage about 17-18mpg and I want to increase this, so I figured a tune-up is a good starting point. Any advice? Thanks

thats about avg. price when talking a major franchise like pepboys , some ford dealers cost more and some cost less. Some independent shops would prolly be a little cheaper , and if you could do some of the stuff your self like switching the wires and plugs '' n have them do the rest' it would cost you less. For quick gas mileage increase go with a K & N filter (they run about 45$) that should put you up around the 20-21 mpg range.

I just did my own tune-up yesterday and these were the costs;

$36.00 Bosch platinum +4 plugs ($5.99 X 6)
$4.00 PCV valves ($1.89 X 2)
$40.00 Bosch plug wires
I didn't have to replace the air filter, just recharge it, K & N.
Total cost about $80.00 plus 1 1/2 hours of my time. I work slow...

You could save money by buying the cheap $12.00 plug wires and the cheap $1.00 plugs.

Speaking of all these plug wires, anyone know where I could order some high performance plug wires that were yellow? Or any kind of wire cover or something to make them yellow?

You can paint them with a vinyl dye.

I use the Bosch Platinum +4 plugs, because I get about 15 - 20% better gas mileage. Turns out to be 50 - 60 more miles per tank.

I've used the Bosch plugs for almost 10 years in all my cars, 85 Olds Calais, 94 Camaro, 00 Hyundai and my 97 Mustang. I've always seen great gas mileage improvements.

I'm thinking about buying some iridium plugs. They cost about $10 each. A buddy of mine is using them and is getting almost 35mpg. I'm sitting at about 30 right now.

Yeah, the tuneups are pretty easy on our cars. I believe Ford Racing makes the wires in yellow. You should also think about changing the fuel filter while you're at it. It's located right in front of the fuel tank. How do you guys get such great gas mileage? Maybe I'm into the throttle alot more than most.

Is there any difference between plug wires for 3.8 and 5.0 besides the fact that theres 8 instead of 6? Cause I can find yellow ford racing plug wires for 5.0's all over the place, but I cant find any for the six...

Nevermind, scratch that, I guess ill be ordering them from StangWires.com Are they any good? I've never heard anything about them. And should I go with 8 or 9 mm?

The amount of resistance is a better indicator than the diameter.

You may want to look at the MSD 8.5MM Magnacore wires- Low resistance, thinner wires for clearance, look great, and not much radio interference.

The price was good, but they're not yellow.

I don't race my car and hardly ever go over 3500 RPM. I would probably get better gas mileage if my car wasn't an automatic.
