Question Underdrive Pulley Questions

I've been doing a little research on underdrive pulleys and their HP and MPG gains. Ive found several different places that sell them, to include eBay. If I were to install one on my 97 Mustang 3.8L, will I need to modify anything? It looks like the pulleys for the crank and alternator are smaller. Will I need to get a new serpentine belt?

yeah, you'd need the pulleys and a shorter belt.

Where would I need to go to get a shorter belt?

Could I use one from the local parts store, or should I get one from a performance shop or buy online?

If buying online would be best, can someone provide a link for the shorter belt?

Are you always in bumper to bumper traffic? Were you looking at the 25 or 42%?Some, not all, have had some temperature problems with underdrivers. It will make you car run a little hotter because the waterpump is spinning slower. Just a thought seeing you're from S.A. Texas.

If you buy online, they will usually sell you with the proper sized belt.

Whats the difference between the 25% and 42% pulleys?

I sit in traffic for about 1 hr a day, to and from work. It sucks, b/c I only live 5 miles away.

I really don't know a lot about performance upgrades on cars.

I was into sportbikes for the last 5 years.

That's a long time to be idling in 90+ degree temps. The percentages is the crank pulley reduction size. The smaller it is, the slower it will turn. You may want to check into the 25% then..... Have you done other mods yet? Dual exhaust and/or cold air induction?

Yeah, but it's still nothing like going 160+mph on a bike.

A while ago, me and 4 friends hauled ass from SA to Austin. It's about 60 miles and we made it there in just over 20 minutes.

So where should I look for a 25% underdrive pulley.

The things I was looking at did not give a % difference.

There are several dealers out there. I believe the motoblue are popular. RPM outlet sells them, but everyone says to call instead of ordering online.

No, there's only the 25% for his year. It was made prior to all the new In Car Entertainment requirements.

Go Direct.

ASP makes them, as well as MAC. The ASP's have lower rotational mass(at least they used to).

What do you mean by "Go Direct"?

What is/are ASP and MAC?

I'm a Microsoft Systems Engineer and
ASP = Active Server Pages used for website/webpage creation
MAC = Media Access Control or Mactintosh computers

I'm a computer geek, sorry........

Oh, sorry about that:

MotoBlue is a wholesaler of generic ASP products. I don't know if they offer the pulleys for the 94-98 cars.

I know the cheapest have historically come from these two companies.

I've found the following links for underdrive pulleys, now I just have to decide which one to buy.

http://www.ssd4u.com/streetsmart_208.htm

http://www.aspracing.com/frame.htm

http://www.macperformance.com/store/...Product_ID=823

http://www.rpmoutlet.com/musv6asp.htm

http://www.americanmuscle.com/bbk-v6-9498-udp.html

All the ones that had % differences stated 25% reduction in crankshaft pulley size. I didn't see any for a 97 that was greater than this.

Prices range from $70 - $110.

eBay also has some listed for about $40
