Okay, maybe I'm a little confused as to what you say is "on" or not, or maybe it's too early in the morning, but I'll try to explain it a little better. Being that you have an auto
tranny, you can just leave the button alone most of the time. It is just an extra speed in the transmission to help with gas mileage as the motor will rev less given highway speeds. The
tranny is made to shift on its' own, so you should let it do it. However, if you are driving in a rural area, say around 40mph or so, and you hear the
tranny shift into OD, as soon as you put your foot on the gas to speed up, it will downshift back into 3rd. You can sometimes hear the engine "lug" or get too low in rpm's as it is trying to shift into a higher gear. This is the time when you should hit the OD off button and keep the rpm's up a bit. I always found it around the 40mph or so speed, just to keep it from lugging because that is bad for your car. Kind of like a manual
tranny. Sure, you can start out in 3rd gear from a stop, but do you really want to? The lugging of the engine is not good for it, and the OD off switch is there for those times.
