Default port and polish or split port setup

I currently own a 97 stang! I am looking into having my engine built up a little. I was wondering if it is worth it to do a split port swap of to have my current intake ported and polished? What is the difference in numbers and price? Im very undecided about this and would love some help!!!!

Gary, KS?

Any thoughts on this? We have been tossing around several ideas. I suggested just a P&P on what he has, and he suggests a P&P along with a split-port swap. A SC may be in his future as well, so affordability may be a factor. I realized the swap and P&P would be the ultimate, but would the gains outweigh the cost? You're talking 2.5k for the P&P and swap, then another 5K for the SC. To much in my book, but that's just me.

ultimate flow is better with the 94-98 heads and intake -there's more material that can be removed.

Or he can just port the heads and throw on an SSX intake and not worry about the porting of the intake.

Racing engines generally cost 12,000 dollars or more for a v8, so it's still a deal.

The split port heads are better, naturally aspirated, they make more torque and the the short/long runner intake is killer.

If it's going to be a long wait for SC-go for the split port, and enjoy the driveability. If it's a package -it's harder to say which way to go.

My Son and I, shine1stang, have been battling over this for awhile. I would just do a P&P on the heads and intake, SC it, and call it a day. There is a local machine shop that can do the headwork for him that would probably be cheaper than what he's found on the internet. That will be enough power for it. He also wants to upgrade the handling. What do you think he should do? It doesn't handle like the 99+.(Dad's car)

All the rubber bushings are probably shot.

Also the geometry of the rack and control arms were upgraded on 1999 for a tighter turning radius . . .

If it were me I would get an 01+ engine from the JY strip the heads off and send those off to get a good porting and upgrade the springs and valves . Then you could slowly do a good rebuild on the 01 block , Forged rods and pistons , plus the 01+ comes with a girdle and windage tray. Put all that together, with new injectors a new eec , then get the blower on when your ready , then you have an engine that can take it . Rod and Pistons only cost about 1200.00 or so but look how much it cost when the stock ones let go. I'm am big about building the engine around the power adder.

My father and I may be purchasing a 01 from his friend as a parts car! The car is in pretty good condition. Its a daily driver with like 160,000 miles on it. Unlike mine whereas i had to replace the engine at 70,000. Blew the headgasket, then eventually the block. lol So the block that is currently in my car is the from a 98.

Well, we'll have to see who will get the block. That was supposed to be my project motor......

What it comes down to is stealth I reckon.

I prefer looking like slightly modified OEM, and surprising the crap out of people over max hp.

It takes more work, but I don't want to give away too much when I pop the hood.

Well yeah, stealth is good. I wasn't too worried about blowing my current one up because of the back-up motor that I would have had in stock. It was going to get rebuilt with stronger internals to handle the SC. But the kid does need one for his car, but then that leaves me out in the cold. Damn kids!!!!!!! We could pull everything from the '01 and put it in his, but he'll owe me big time.
