Ok rq I was driving at night when i've noticed some power (lights) lost. I was able to make it home, but while driving my radio died. my gauge meter was down but then I parked it and waited 2 mins. and tried to start it again and gauge went up. Kept trying but then it totally died out. Is it the starter? or something else?

I have added some accessories to mine. Foglights and heated leather seats. I have since lost 2 alternators. I'm pretty sure it is your alternator. Not a big deal to have replaced. Your battery will go completely dead if you don't get it replace. They will test it before replacing it so you know you got the right thing

From what you are describing, it does sound like an alternator issue to me. When was the last time it was replaced?

This actually happened to me twice before, once in my old Camaro and back in H.S. with my Oldsmobile Calais. Turned out to be the alternator both times.

Autozone can check it out if you can get it to them. They can check it on or off the car, but off the car testing would be best.

While you're at it, you might want to get the battery checked, if it's old/bad you'll want to get a new one. If it is NOT a sealed battery, open the tops, if it smells like rotten eggs, you have a bad cell and will definately need a new battery.

Well I bought the car from the dealer on april 06', I have not done any mechanical work on the car yet, when I bought it it had 40k miles so far I have 55k but it's all hwy miles went to NY twice and NC once. But it feels like the alternator because I was able to start it about 5 times that same day, before it finally died out. So I figure the battery is not being recharged. But what bothers me is the way the gauge reacted, never seeing any of my previous car act like that. The gauge would be sitting all the way to the negative side, and then would jump all the way to the + side ,and then go to the middle... then it would decrease as the car was on. Never seeing anything "the gauge acting" like that.

FIRST, check the battery posts for corrosion. You can clean them with battery cleaner from an auto parts store or use Coke. Also check to make sure the cables, including the ground to the engine block, are not loose. At that point, you should have the the battery and charging system checked out.

When the gauges move wildly like that it can sometime just be the voltage regulator thats built into the alternator , get it checked at autozone , it's a lot cheaper than a new alternator .

WOW just got the quotes by autozone and automotive doctors, autozone said it's $245 for the alternator but I have to do it myself automotive doctors quoted me at $354.18 for part + labor. here is the thing on ebay they have the alternator at $99 + like $25 shipping and handling, if I order it and decide to do it myself, how hard would it be? any tips or website that might help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advanced

It's probably a salvaged alternator.

Youcan do the labor, Pick up a Chilton's or HAynes manual at AutoZone.

I always get both. Different views, etc.

On the Fox body, the Chiltons was better, but on the 99-01 Manual by Haynes was superior.

If you're going to get a salvaged part, it would be better getting one from a local yard -that way you can return it.

Alternators are easy to install. Holy crap? That much for an alternator? It's been awhile since I had to buy one. See if the one on Ebay is remanufactured or used.

Advance auto has one for $147.00, and autozone for 200.00 in my area. Try shopping online for it in your zipcode first. I know the regions make a difference, but damn!!!!!

Hey MB, we need help with the story.....
