Default Problems with my 2000 Mustang V6

Hello, I bought a Mustang Coupe with a V6 motor a few weeks ago. The car has bad road noise and vibration when under a load. Exhust leak on passenger side and appears to be gasket related. I had new tires put on the car undercoated the bottom of the car thinking this would help road noise. Its better now! I still have a vibration when the car is under load and quits when coasting. I put it on a rack to inspect u-joints and they appeared ok. I found the front yoke had some up and down slack going into the transmission.. Also the rearend seal is leaking. Any Ideas about this. I was told there is a bushing in the rear housing of the trans that could be bad. 150.00 part at local Ford Dealer. I was also told that exhust manifold could be cracked, but its a tube manifold and not cast. If I pull the rear housing off the transmission will the transmission have to be supported? Will the transmission fluid leak out? I havent worked on cars in a while and when looking at a repair manual it didint explain anything about these issues. Thanks for feedback, and picture would be great. Cambjam

This is the v6 forum and that was not helping. I would think that the problem may be in your exhaust (muffler) because the noise ocurs under a load. If you are already having problems with your exhaust I would try replacing (and possibly upgrading) it. If that solves your problem great, but if not i would look into the rear end or tranny. Either way you have a better exhaust system and you havent wasted your time.

the extension housing bushing and cracked exhaust manifolds are a common problem. (although ks thinks its from the ac, ive never seen it happen because of that.) determine which side the leak is coming from. most likely you will have a cracked manifold, and would be best to get some aftermarket headers or new ford ones. as for the extension housing bushing in the trans. next time its up on a lift, grab the driveshaft by the transmission side and see if you can wiggle the driveshaft up and down, and if its leaking from the seal. if both are true, then you need a new extension housing, or bushing if you can find one. support the engine with a pole jack and a piece of wood under the engine, remove driveshaft, the cross member and mount, and get a drainer under the rear of the trans. lower the trans down a little and remove all of the 13mm extensionhousing bolts. if it doesnt come off right away, tap it lightly with a hammer.

Thanks to all that have replyed. I pulled the exhust manifold and found a crack on the line that goes to the EGR valve. Sorry if I forgot to mention passanger side exhust leak. Looking for a better deal than 125.00 for replacement. I still think the vibration that I feel is the bushing in the extension housing. I was told you have to replace the whole housing and install a new seal. Again Im gaining imformation fast about this car and must say thanks to all that are helping.

You can go to the salvage for the manifold , the tranny , I would have a transmission shop take a look at it . Most tranny shops will do diagnostics for free and give you an estimate of the repair .

aftermarket headers. and get under there and try to wiggle the driveshaft up and down at the transmission side. if it wiggles then replace the extension housing. when you go to ford, the new extension housing comes with a seal and bushing already installed. be sure to get a new steel core gasket while youre at the dealer, and about 2 quarts of merconV.
