Default Loud noise then Check engine light

My wife driving her 1996 3.8L when at a red light she heard a loud pop. She thinks it came from under the car then the check engine light came on. When she got home I looked at the codes it is P0171 and P0174 left bank lean and right bank lean. What could have made the pop and set off these codes? Anyone?

Well, since you are running lean you are not getting enough gas to the motor.Check your fuel lines to make sure that they are not busted. I had the same thing in mine, I was running lean, i looked on the internet, every site said it could be a bad MAF sensor. I was following my girl when she was driving mine, we filled up, and I noticed a gas leak. Fixed it, cleared the computer, now its fine.

So check your fuel system for leaks.

Could be anything. Any other suspicious noises?

(Trying to do it over the internet is probably going to take a lot more time than just running it to the dealership, in this case)

Thanks for the input. As far as anyother noises she has not mentioned any. She is driving my Jeep today so I can drive the stang and try to figure out what is going on with it. Running to the dealership is not a good option over here. They charge outragous prices over here, with the conversion rate currently at .71 I would need a loan just to pay the service department. Quick example I was going to order brakes for my Jeep (just rear shoes no wheel cylinders or drums) they wanted 80 euro for them. That is equivalent $98 U.S.D so I went and ordered them from autozone for $20 and free shipping to military APO addresses.

The Canadian dollar costs $1.12 (It was 1.19). The dollars getting to be pretty worthless . . . I've never seen the Canadian dollar valued more than the American Dollar.

Out of curiosity, did you crawl under the car to take a look if anything was missing, broken or cracked?

As soon as she got it home I looked over everything top to bottom. The one thing that i think is causing the problem it the 90 degree plastic fitting after the MAF on the intake tube is cracked. The loud pop she heard it what has me puzzled.

Ah, that could explain the codes- leak in the intake.

Did a belt hit it?

I don't know how it happened. I may have cracked the last time I replace the air filter and it just now decided to start throughing codes. I will have to stop by the stealership to see how much for the fitting or order from autozone. I'll keep everyone posted on the fix.
