A while ago I posted a question about the blinking airbag light on my 94
stang. Turns out that the light blinks trouble codes at you for various errors it finds, poor ground, low voltage, high voltage, etc. If the error / problem is intermitent or gets repaired, the computer still has that code in its NVRAM - Non Volatile Random Access Memory, but it will add 40 to the trouble code.
When I got my car, it was blinking 61 at me. What this meant was the car originally had error 21 (module voltage low I think) but then was corrected. So it would blink a 61 (21 + 40 = 61)
From what I understand, the NVRAM will hold this code forever until it is manually cleared...
I will start out by saying that I know enough about aribags that I know I dont know anything about them. I presumed they could go off at any time with me tinkering around withe wires, connections, etc. I was careful not to have any part of me or anything important in front of the airbag in case it went off... Always better to be safe than sorry. Please, DO BE CAREFUL if you are going to tinker around with this. Having said my piece, on to the heart of the matter...
In order to clear the codes (only works for codes over 40 or ones that have been corrected) you must find a grey connector under the passenger glove box. My connector has 3 male terminals, but only 2 wires going to it - 1 black and 1 red/purple I recall.
Normally when you start the car, the airbag light stays on for about 5 seconds, then it will flash out any trouble codes. Wait until it gets thru a complete code (for me it was 6 then 1) then short out the 2 wires with a jumper before it starts its second cycle. Hold the connection for about 5 seconds until you hear a beep from the airbag computer then break the connection.
Thats it. There may be additional codes stored on the computer that may need to be maunually retrived, but I am not 100% on the instructions.
I hope this helps... it seems quite a few people have the airbag light on.
I got my information from a great website that has the code list, description, wiring schematics, repair procedures and everything, but I cannot find the site again. I will bee sure to post once I have found it.
