I have a 2000 mustang automatic coupe. its ran perfect with no problems for a long time. Yesterday i was just casualy driving around and went to make a U-Turn and when i pulled back on the road all the car did was rev. I got it into a decent sized parking lot and ran threw all the gears. I got park, 2nd and reverse working. Today when i took it out it would run threw all the gears but it was lagging between shifts and running like crap. I know its something in the transmition or maybe a electrical problem. Any help would be appriciated.

how long since you changed your tranny fluid? Or even checked it?

I agree. Is it even full of fluid? It's a dumb question but I've seen people change their oil, fire it up and then panic about no oil pressure. Then they see the case of oil sitting on the ground beside the car, waiting to go in.

Ask me why I ran "only" a 13.54.

Yea i probly should of included that i had a new filter and the fluid changed about two months / 3,000 miles ago so i know its not that, and i checked it last night and its perfect.
Well, you did the right thing by maintaining the trans but the question now is: Did the shop that did the job do it right? Who did the work and did they wipe the inside of the trans or pan with a cloth? I know that you never touch anything inside the trans with a cloth, but not all service departments do.

I didnt get to accualy watch the do that work but its a really good shop, plus the same tech rebuilt my friends trans, and did 2 of our other cars not long before, and no problems ever came up with them so i dont think it was that expesualy since after i got the it done the car ran great. Its got 132,000 miles on it and i expect something is bound to break eventualy, its just wierd how it randomly did mid drive.
Probably NOT the shop, then! On the offchance that there is a similar setup, something like this happened to a 1988 Mercury GMarquis. This car had a bushing in the transmission linkage that held the transmission throttle position linkage in place. The bushing wore and allowed the throttle postion linkage to drop out of engagement with the throttle body. It did a very similar thing to what you're car is doing. Check all your underhood linkage and make sure that it's all connected properly.

I just looked at it all on top and underneath and it all looks like its hooked up right, theres nothing missing, from looking at it i cant see anything that looks wrong. Im not a big tech guy but I know the basics and some but from what I can tell without taking it apart I cant see anything wrong. The whole thing has me really confused so I'll probly take it to a transmition shop tomarrow and just see what it needs but thanks a lot for all your help.
so you were goin slow? and then it revved then went into gear harshly? it might be an accumulator spring, or it may just be a little bit low on fluid. changing the fluid and filter will take about 4.5 quarts upon fill up. next time you drive it around, when you get home check the trans fluid with the engine running and trans in park or neutral. the fluid should be in the crosshatch area.

Yea thats what one of classmates said and it doesnt smell burnt or nething like that and it was just changed about 2,000 miles ago. But I had just made a U turn and when I pulled on the main road i went to give it gas and all it did was rev like i was in nutral. So i rolled into a parking lot and went through all my gears and the only things working at that time were reverse and 2nd. I drove it back to my appartment in 2nd and now this morning all the gears are workign again its just running like crap.
