Question Best combo...

For a '98 V6 what would be a good gearing-shifter set up? 3.73's or 4.10's with a Tri-ax or 5.0 Pro shifter?

And is there any hope of ever beating a 5.0 cobra?

I hear 4.10's are too steep for a stock 6, My route is getting a 8.8 complete rear with 3.90's. As for shifters,,, I am getting a pro 5.0 for xmas and can give my personal opion after I get it in. The general opinion is that a pro 5.0 with triax handle works best.

Hope for beating a 5.0 Cobra??? Sure, anything is possible. all depends on if they are stock and what you got. I'd say if they are stock you'll need a good poweradder and upgrade a few things to help you manage your power. Lots of HP is a good thing but when you can't use it what is the point in having it?

How much you got to spend?

I have a mostly stock 02 V6 and I have beaten my friends 93 Cobra before. Granted, he has 250,000 miles on it, but I still beat a Cobra!

hey ponyboy, thanks for the input and is there any definite reason as to the reason 4.10's are too steep for a stock 6? I've seen many people have them on various mustang sites but they did not have to change the rear any (at least that they posted). And I am just trying to figure out how much I will have to spend to get these mods done, right now I would say my next mod is going to be CAI. But i have yet to find out how much i am getting for christmas so I'm not sure when I'll get this stuff. Hopefully have it all done before the summer.

Your best bet with the CAI is to make one, saves you some money that can go to things that will give you more HP per dollar. As for the gears, 4.10's will be too steep on a daily driver because they will have you cranking high RPM's most of the time which means lots of strain on the engine and burning up lots of money in gas. Plus the V6's hit red line and end the torque curve sooner so it would almost be like a waist. You can get 3.74's and 4.10's for the 7.5 rear end that you have now. But the only people making 3.90's right now is Pro 5.0 and they only make it for the 8.8. The 8.8 will suit me better in the long and 3.90's is a good deal between 3.75's and 4.10's... But only for the crazies, like me
