Question 1996 Mustang Coupe fuel, temp, odo & trip not working

Please somebody help me!
I just bout a 1996 Mustang V6 coupe and some of the functions on the cluster are not working.
The fuel and temp gauges are not working, and the odometer and tripometer are both not working. The other gauges, warning lights, Speedo and tach all work, and all the fuses seem to be in good shape, so I am stumped

Has anyone else had this problem?
I would appreciate any help anyone could give.

P.S. -- glad to be part of such a helpful forum.

I wouls say to take a look under the dash to see if any plugs are off. Yeah, I know, tons of space under there to look.....

Then I would take off your dash panel to see if anything is not plugged in on your instrument cluster.

Did someone put in whiteface gauges or anything?

No, everything is stock on this car as far as I know (cluster is for sure).
Just having those few problems.
Those were my next steps, just thought I would see if anyone had some method that I hadn't thought of, or if there was a common problem in this area.

Do you know if there is anything besides the fuses and fuel sender that would control the fuel gauge?
Also, if looking at the tranny (for the odo/trip problem), what should I look for as far as a good pick up sensor/speed sensor?

It has to be something electrical. The speedo is mechanical. That's why it is working, but not your odometer, which is electrical.

Out of curiosity, what color are is the backplate on the gauges(white or black)?

There are two wire harnesses behind the cluster (not under). You'll have to remove the plastic cluster, remove 4 main bolts and pull the cluster out to look.

That's the only logical thing I can think of.

Not on a 96.

If his odometer isn't working, then more than likely it's broken gears inside the gauge. Everyone with pre-99's has that happen sooner or later.

Backplate is black.

Thanks for the info everybody.
What do ya'll think about the temp and fuel gauges?
I am more concerned with those working than the odo & trip... I figure electrical, but why are the voltage & oil pressure working?
Different pins maybe?

Thanks again for everyone's input.

Those are supplied by a different harness on the back of the dash panel.

Thanks.
I'll have to get a torx set before I can go any further.

CEL came on last night... is there a way to read CEL codes w/o a OBD-II?
