Good day all, I am new to this forum, but not to Mustangs. My wife has a 2000 V-6 Mustang and I've noticed I can smell gas from the back of her car after driving it. Last night the SES light came on and although I haven't checked the DTC, I'm assuming they're related, probably a Evap leak. Has anyone heard of any "common" problems with this model vehicle? The car runs fine, but for safety reasons I'd prefer her to not drive it until this is resolved. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Get the DTC before anything else. That will narrow down whats really wrong with it. If you can smell gas out the tailpipes, the car's running too rich for some reason. Possibly the fuel pressure regulator has gone bad, but, something's probably wrong with the fuel system IF THE CAR IS STOCK. If the car is running too rich, the car is safe to drive but should be fixed within a month of this occurrence.
If the car smells of fuel after its been driven near the back, look up underneath it and check the seal that goes from the filler neck to the tank, those seals tear and leak all the time. But you should retreive the DTC to make sure its not something else.

It's not unburned gas from the tailpipes. It's definitely RAW gas from around the gas tank itself. Trust me, I've had a high HP monster that dumped fuel out the tail pipes. It's definitely from or around the tank.

check the gas tank for any punctures, make sure the fuel filter is screwed in tight, and check all the fuel lines up and around the gas tank
hi, i just got my 01 back from the shop with the same problem...it turned out to be the rubber *gromit* that seals the tank from the neck of where you put gas in...from what ive seen and hear this is a common thing and if it was up to me it would be a factory defect..but who am i, right? so, sounds like its the same for you...
