Ok, I just wanna take a second and say, I really appreciate you guys, some of these questions are really I guess you could say noobish, but you have to learn someday, but I just wanted to take a second and thank you guys for the info i've gotten from this place, I feel more comfortable asking here than anywhere else.
Anyway. To the point.
I got a 1998 V6 with 180k miles clocked in. I want to put a small cam in really just for the sound, I love a loping engine. But i've heard from people that putting a cam on my car would be a bad thing. I don't know much about cams other than the lope, and what it does. But what would be a good cam to put in? I don't want to lose a whole lot of mpg. I'm not looking for anything on the performance side, I really just LOVE the sound. I don't want a huge lope I just want a small noticeable lope, you know? But could someone give me a BUNCH of information on cams, and what kind would suit me best and how much am I looking at to put one in my car. How many mpg would I lose?
how much HP can you get from the 4.0L V6?
I need a cheep car for roadracing and at the time i though buying a V6 was a good idea. it was cheep, reliable and looked cool. All i needed was a daily driver. I couldn't afford a V8.
I was going to swap the V6 out for a 302 V8. not a good idea wayyy too much work.
I then thought about supercharging the V6 and adding cams and heads. JBA headers, dual exhaust. But I dont know how reliable the supercharger is.
The i though about buying a 4.6L V8 crate engine. it would fit in my car with minor mods.
honestly what should i do? (as of right now money is no problem, but im not trading in my car)

Well just depends on the type of Camshaft you want really. Im not sure how your setup is on your car. Is it an overhead cam?? There are different things you need to consider, if you get a larger loop throw on your cam or even a smaller loop then you are going to have to change your timing for when your intake and exhaust valves open and close otherwise your timing will be off in your combustion chamber and that wont be good at all.
There is a writeup on how cams work, and who to go through to get a properly spec'd cam.....
The answer was not noob-friendly. The wanted answer was an estimated horsepower gain, gas mileage loss, and other effects. The post was just an in-depth explanation of how camshafts affect the car, it was a nice answer... to a different question.

You should check out the crane cams and compcams web site. It usually gives you enough info on perticular cams for your engine and you could talk to there tech dept. and they will help you out. As for your mpg it probably wont be affected since you don't want to get a racing cam. Instalation may cost you a $1000+ if you can't do it yourself.
