73 front licsence plate, is it needed in California

Okay i live in SoCal and the guy i bought the car from said the 73 ford mustang is exempt from needing a front licsence plate but ofcourse i got stopped and ticketed for it. The cop basically said he knew of no exemption to the law but my father-in-law drives a new Envoy and he has no front plates. So i just wanted to see if anyone might have ran into this problem or knows if the plates are a must.

Like Twister there a must here in California. I went without one for 6 years until I got a ticket for it 3 weeks ago.

No years are exempt, everyone must have a front plate. With that said I have not been running one on the front of my 65. So far no ticket.

Twister got it right, It has been a law for many years but not enforced. Some cops liked to use it as a reason to pull someone over. Not until city started to start installing the red light cameras did they really start handing out tickets on it.

That and it is the most reflective part on the front of the car. Radar!

Just keep it in the front passanger window. I was going to do that untill the dealer put the frame on the car for me, unwanted!!!! I guess it all depends on the police officer, to ignore it or pull you over.

1. Citing a vehicle for not having a front plate is driven by money since many cash-strapped locals have installed red-light cameras.

2. Such a citation is NOT a moving violation. Ponch gives you a "fix it" ticket. Your insurance company does not care about fix its. Only the police.

3. Do not install a front tag, pay your fine. Move on. Cheaper than a red light violation.

OK this is the deal about the plate in the front, 1. while running a stop light smile as the camera gets a picture of your plate! and yes it is the law to have one on, you wont get pulled over for it unless you get a anal cop, I personaly wouldnt pull you over unless i had a reason to and i would use that as the reason,if I were you i would keep it with you and if so put it on the dash board, at least you will have it if you get pulled over, front plates are the law in Cali but not forced unless you get a anal cop!

We have a police officer that will spend hours a day going from one school to another, not just the high schools, citing every car he can find without a front plate! Students and teachers, at least he is an equal opportunity anal cop.
