It considered tampered equipment in CA if you remove or disable the pump, you will have to check with your state laws to see if its legal, most states are starting to get strict like CA. You MIL may also come on if you take it out.

Oh too bad, I have a 1997 F-250 that just failed smog because it is running too lean. Any ideas what it could be?

Could be timing, MAF or MAP sensor, restricted fuel line or fuel filter, weak fuel pump. Do you have the emissions percentages that were printed out?

I see that it passed the emissions test with flying colors, according to the results its running at about 14.7:1 air/fuel ratio which is great, the problem is the computer doesn't think its correct. I would start by cleaning the mass air flow sensor with MAF sensor cleaner that you can find at Napa or Autozone, undo the connector from the sensor, remove the bolts and see if the wire is dirty, if it is spray it down, let it dry and reinstall. Then see clear the codes(either with a scanner or leave the NEG- batterey cable off for 20min), drive it for a couple days so the the computers non-continuous monitors can run, if the MIL doesnt return take it in and have them run a pre-test first to see if that fixed the problem. Make sure you also have no vaccum leaks.

I looked under the hood today and found the screws for the box around the air filter loose. I tightened the screws and disconnected the neg cable and there was no check engine light. I'll drive it for a few days and let you know how things turn out. Thanks for the help!

Question New CA reg, pre-1975

I want to bring a 1966 GT into CA that was previously registered in another state. Will it be exempt from ALL smog checks or will it have to be checked when I first register in CA? If so, will the engine need to be modified to add CA emissions control devices?

66' will be exempt from everything. If for some reason they give you a SMOG slip at the DMV, its because they want to verify the model year or the VIN wont match in the computer. ask them where the nearest SMOG Referee is located, he'll just look to verify that it is a 66' and you'll be good to go. I just registered my 66' with no problems

Thumbs up Thank you.

Thanks for the good news! I had visions of having to smother the car with CA smog equipment.
