Vintage race car show at Irwindale Speedway 01/11/03
VINTAGE RACING CAR TECH INSPECTION
OPEN TO PUBLIC:
ANNUAL V.A.R.A. EVENT BECOMES
A SPECIAL CAR SHOW
SATURDAY, JANUARY 11, 2003 - IRWINDALE SPEEDWAY
Irwindale, Calif. - - For the third year in a row, the Vintage Auto Racing Association ("VARA") will present its Annual Technical Inspection as a public-invited event at Irwindale Speedway on Saturday, January 11 from 8AM to 3PM.
Originally set up simply as a pre-season car inspection, Annual Tech was transformed into a true car show when it went public at Irwindale Speedway a few years ago. "One of our members thought that Tech Day was a great season-starter and that interested fans might get a kick out of seeing many of our celebrated old racing cars up close," explained VARA board member Murray Chalmers. "It turned out to be a great idea, and, with the folks at Irwindale letting us use their beautiful facility, the idea just took off. We expect over 100 cars, and their owners to be on site at the Speedway on January 11."
These are not show cars, but real honest-to-goodness veteran machines. From Corvettes to Mallocks and from Ferraris to D-Type Jaguars, old Indy Cars, Porsches, Formula 1 Cars, Alfas, MGs, Ralts, LeGrands, Triumphs, T-Birds, Maseratis, Royales, Beemers, Can-Ams and Chevrons … Fans might expect to see almost any famous-make racing car of the past few decades at Irwindale Speedway on that Saturday. Fans will also be able to meet the owners and drivers of these special machines, talk to them about the history of the cars and ask questions about possible participation themselves.
Although these cars will not "race" at Irwindale, fans will be able to see these cars in action during the 2003 season at many southwestern road racing tracks like Willow Springs, Las Vegas, Buttonwillow, Phoenix, and California Speedway.
Best of all, admission to this "season starter" is free as is the parking. The published hours are from 8AM to 3PM, but the brothers and sisters of the wire wheel, open cockpit, and straight six overhead cam will be getting there early in the day to see the maximum number of cars and to converse with their interesting owner/drivers. Fans are advised to bring their cameras, to wear comfortable shoes and "layered" clothing. Shooting sticks, corduroy pants, tweed touring hats, string-back shorty driving gloves, and elbow patch jackets are optional.
Irwindale Speedway is located on the 605 freeway at Live Oak Avenue. From the south take the Live Oak west off-ramp (second gear, hard braking at stop at top of ramp) and continue across the freeway to Speedway Drive. From the north, take the Arrow Highway (can be taken flat in third) off-ramp west two stop lights to Live Oak, make a (first gear) hard left on Live Oak to Speedway Drive.
