I just talked to one of my buddies right now and he has ran a 315 on a 9 inch wide wheel. He said it was a B!TC# putting them on but its not impossible to so I think a 295 would fit.
You said a 255, why would you put a 255 on it when a 275 every one knows will fit.

Sure it will fit, but the tires performance will be compromised
I said 255 because thats the largest "recommended" for 8" wheel.
275 recommends minimum a 9" wheel.
I run 275/40 on an 8" stock wheel, but it does look funny because its a shorter tire, and bubbles out over the edge of the rim. But it only gets driving down the strip and back like that. No way would I want to do daily driving on an oversized tire on a small rim.

Datboy, the rule of thumb is the rim width + or - 1''. So on a 9'' rim the ideal tire would be a 255 because the section width is 10''(that is not tread width) On an 8'' rim a 225. but what the hell are you going to do with a 225. Those are manufacturer, perfect world cenarios. we have all put 275's on 9's with no prob. Tact out; a 315 on a 9'' rim is really asking for trouble. a 315 is 12.5'' wide. Thats an 1 3/4'' over hang on either side. The reason that is trouble is because when you have to push the tire in that far to the rim it changes the angle of the tire bead almost 90 degrees. The tire bead wants to go horizontal rather than vertical. It can actually blow off.

Aspect ratio is a percentage of the width ie; 275(width in milimeters) 40 (aspect ratio), the height is approximately 40 percent of the width. The aspect ratio might change the section width because taller tires have a more bulge to the side wall but tread width shouldn't change at all. a 275 still has a tread width of 275mm wether it is a 30 or 40 series tire. Stoenr, as for your last comment, a 225 40 and a 275 40 are not the same section width, nor are they the same height. A 275 is 50mm wider than a 225. Being such, 40 percent of 275 is larger than 40 percent of 225. Therefore a 275 40 is 1 15/16'' wider than the 225 it is also 7/8''m taller. By the way, it is not my rule
