275x40 is a nice tire, but I think you can squeeze a 325x35 or 315x35 in there.

If your car isn't lowered you can put an 11''-11 1/2'' rim in there with a maximum backspacing of about 8'' with the 1.25 spacer. I have a 97 cobra with 11'' rims. they are 03 cobra wheels with 2'' added to the inside of the rim. I also have a 1'' wheel spacer. As it sits, the outside of the wheel is flush with the wheel well and I have about an inch of clearance between the rim and the upper control arm. It was about a 1/2'' which I though was a little close so I bought Edelbrock adjustable UCA's because they are smaller in diameter. Thus gaining that additional 1/2'' of clearance for peace of mind. When you order rims you will need to know the offset and backspacing which will be critical when you are planning on squeezing in a big wheel. I suggest you take as many preliminary measurements as possible. As for tires, I have a 315 35 17 and the entire tire fits under the car.

You'll be able to fit a 10.5 wheel with 315/35s out back no problem. I have that same combo on my '89 LX coupe and got them to fit. Also test fitted them on my '94 Cobra and didnt have any problems.
