Default Going From 17" to 18" Wheels, Need Advice On What Fits And Compatibility

I would like to replace my 17" wheels with 18" and wanted to know if I had to do anything special to the vehicle. I've been looking on LateModelRestoration's website, and I like the 18x10 FR500's and Nitto Nt555's... but what size tire would be good? I'm swingin' towards the 265/35/18 size, but how will I know if it fits a 18x10 wheel? (A brief account of how tire sizes are read would be good also... I've tried finding that info on the net but never could find an 'idiots guide' that gives a good explanation and some good pictures. No joke, every 'guide' I've looked at fails to tell what the 'xxx/xx'/xx in simple terms, I gave up after a while and basically went with comparable numbers from 50resto's bundle packages.)

By the bye, if any of you know where to get some Fikse Mach V's for the same price as the FR500's, that would rock too...

ya i have 18x9 saleen rims size 275/35/18 in the rear. the 275, means the width. 275cm wide.. 245's are skinner and 315's are very wide. the middle number is how tall the rubber is on the top. 275/70/20 would be real tall for a truck, but 275/35/18 is very thin. the smaller the number like 35's or 30's, the better it looks on your car, but if you live around lots of potholes it kind of increases your chances of a flat tire.

Still a little hazy, but let me see if I got this...

the first three numbers (say 275) is the amount of cm's in diameter of the tire (?); the second two numbers still evade my grasp.

Also, what about fitting to a 18x10 size wheel... where do you find those numbers, or is it part of the xxx/xx/xx set?

Thanks for the reply, Icemanod23, but I'm about as car-stupid as they get.

here it is guys. ''275 35 18''.
275 is the section width in milimeters. not tread width, but section width. meaning; at its widest point. the middle number is the aspect ratio. This number ''35'' means the tire height is approximately 35% of the width. the last number we all know. What people don't realize is that the height of the tire changes when you add width to the tire. reason being 35% of 275 is larger than 35% of 225. So, two tires with the same aspect ratio but different widths are different heights as well as different widths. In determining widths convert mm to inches by deviding the number by 25.4... ex; 295mm devided by 25.4= 11.61 inches. And for aspect ratio; multiply the width by the aspect ratio to get the sidewall height. ex; 295 (11.61'') multiplied by .35= 103.25mm (4.06'') you can also add 4.06+4.06+18 and get the overall diameter of 26.12'' overall diameter. Hope that helps.

Right on, guys, thanks for the info!

Now I have another question, because I was thinking of putting 18x10 wheels on the front and back... but was told by a coworker that 18x10's on the front would restrict my steering radius because of rubbing on the fender wells (or something like that). Would it be more sensible to go 18x9 front/back? I want to keep the front and back wheel size the same since different wheel sizes means I can't rotate the tires and tire/tread life will suffer.

trying to keep the fronts and backs the same size is going to limit you. You are only going to fit about a 255 in the front if your offset and backspacing are perfectly calculated. I would call a reputable tire/wheel vender and let them tell you what fits. They have access to an extensive database of what fits what. Dude, the day you bought a mustang is the day you decided to forgo good milage, be it fuel or tire. Sorry I had to be the one to tell you. Don't hate me.

I am about to buy my wheels too. I decided to go from the 17 to the 18. 9 in front and 10 in the rear. The Nitto 555 is a great tire. Have not picked a size yet. Looking for the best set up!

spaceghost- if your questions havn't been answered, or you would like more info, you may want to try tirerack.com..they have a great vehicle fitament section which will help you decide what the sizes are for our cars..can also look at the wheels on your car with the view wheel on vehicle feature which allows you to see it with your car colour etc..gd luck

Dude, if you go to Tirerack.com know that they don't tell you everything that fits. When it comes to tires, they recomend a good all-around size, not everything. And as for rims, they'll show you what they stock that fits not the largest size you can fit. It is a helpful site, but don't expect an education
