Default Widest Rear Tires? 2000 Mustang

What is the widest rear tire and rim size you can fit on the back of a 2000 Mustang GT? Does that change if it is lowered? Are there any modifications (roll fenders, etc) you can/should do to fit a wider tire size? Thanks again!

I had a 2003 GT, put 10.5 inch rims 315/35/17 and there were no clearance issues. LOOKED GREAT!!!

Default 335

I've seen a few folks run 335 series tires, but clearance depends on the wheels you pick and their offset.

Most common problem is rubbing on the quad shocks, which can be solved several ways. Best method is to swap in good quality lower control arms and eliminate the things. Cheap fix is to reverse them on their mounts so that the rods are facing up.

Thanks guys! I'm glad Ford finally made room for some decent sized meat in the back. My last 'Stang wouldn't hold bigger than a 275 tire with the fenders rolled and quad shock turned around. A 315 would have been real nice.

Just wanted to add, I test fit a friend's 19x10" rear wheels on my 01 GT and had at least an inch inside and an inch outside for clearance. Anyone run 20x11 rear wheel with a 315 tire? Aside from turning the quad shocks around, which has been common since the Fox body, is there anything else I might need to do to clear this big a wheel/tire combo? My vehicle is only lowered about an inch with Eibach's and I don't plan to lower it any more. TIA.

Just FYI, I actually like having the rear wheels sit flush with the edge of the fender lip, as long as it doesn't rub all damn day...

Whether or not the tires will rub depends on the tire as much as the wheel. Overall height is the combination of the wheel size (ie, 17-20") and the wheel size (expressed metric numbers like 40, 35, 30, 25, 20 series, ie, 295/35 ZR18) as the wheel size goes up, the series size goes down, keeping the overall height of the combination close to the stock numbers.

Tires that have wide, rounded sidewalls will VARY in physical width, even though the are rated the same metric width (contact patch will be close to the rated width, ie, 295, but the overall width of the tire might be a lot wider due to protruding sidewalls). Tires with very square shoulders will fit easier and will not protrude much from the wheels.
