Default Bullitt Wheels on 2004 Mustang, staggered size

I am looking to get 4 bullitt wheels from american muscle, i want to get 17x8 in the front and 17x9 in the rear, the tire sizes they recommend for each wheel is: 17x8 - 245/45-17 17x9 - 275/40-17. I am confused why the sidewall ratio changes, shouldn't they both be either 45 or 40, not one of each? Thanks for the help.

Yes their recommendation is correct. The "series" or Aspect Ratio is the ratio of the height of the tire's cross-section to its width. So when the rear tire is wider than the front the aspect ratios must be different in order for the tires to have the same height. 245x.45=110.25 275x.40=110 almost perfect. Look here for more details.Tire Tech - Calculating Tire Dimensions.

exactly...if both tires had a 40 sidewall, then they wouldn't be the same size diameter..One would have a sidewall that was 40% of 245 and the other 40% of 275.

i think its gonna be different.. they are right becuase you are getting one 8 inch wide and one 9 inch wide.. i think the 275/45-17 would be good for your 9 inch.. thats what size i have on mine and they are good and wide enough to were if i ever do.. which i wont.. it will protect me from curb rash..

aow 17 and 18 is a big difference bro.. i was looking for good prices and i got my 275/45-17s for around 400.. i asked them how much it would be for 18s and they said it would be like double.. thats why i went with 17s

thanks for the help, i thought the ratio number was the same for every wheel size, like 40% of the diameter was rubber, i don't know what i was thinking, anyway it makes since now, thanks for the info.

275/45 is not keeping the diameter of the tire the same....to keep the diameter the same as stock he would have to run 275/35 I believe..

and yes I know which is the only reason I wish I went 17's but I couldn't help but drool when I saw the 18's...they fill the wheel well so nicely
