Default Tire size for 1966 mustang with 15X7 wheels

Hi yall,

I am about to finish the wifes 66 and will purchasing the wheel vintiques 15 X 7 steel styled wheels. I am not trying to find the widest tire possible that will fit because it is not a hot rod. I want a good quality tire with NO clearance issues on a bone stock car that provides good traction for my wife. I want as much foot print as I can get but I don't want it to look like a road racer either. I am not sure how the metric sizes cross over but I think these cars came with F-78-14's. I know a wider tire will fit but not sure how much. I think the guys at Dallas Mustang said a P-255 will go under it without a problem but I can't remember.

Thanks for the help,

Steve

Hello Steve,

I have a set of 15X7 Magnum 500 wheels on my 66 Fastback. I am running 225 60 15 on all four. I would not go any bigger then that. I have some very slight rubbing on the inside of the tire from hitting the upper control arm. It does not really affect anything other then making a small shiny spot on the upper arm. I have no issues at all other then that. Even on hard cornering I have not ever rubbed the fenders.

I have a set of 15X7 Shelby Ten Spokes on my '66 Convertible and run 215-60-15 Bridgestone radials. I have been very pleased. I will get you the exact model number if you wish.

I put 235/60/15 all around on my 66, keep in mind just changed all springs (front springs 1/2" drop) & shocks. They fit great on the rear, the fronts were hitting the fender wells. I was promised there wouldn't be any clearance issues at the time I purchased them. Well in my own own mind I figure either I was going to replace the front springs or go to a smaller tire for the front. Well one of my front tires got a cut in the side wall (not by the fender well), so I now have 215/60/15 in the front & 235/60/15 on the rear. No clearance issues.

Thanks to all,

Anybody got any photo's of how those sizes look on the car? I have rebuilt the front end and installed new springs on all four corners so the car should sit up nice when it goes back on the ground. The tires that were on it when I got it were 245/50's and someone in the past rolled the wheel lips for clearance. I will be un-rolling them before I fit up the wheels and tires. It sounds like a toss up between 215's and 225's with the restored wheel well lips.

Steve
