Default How Fast Does Salt Eat Chrome?

Does anybody with chrome rims know how long it will take for salt to destroy my chrome? I recently came upon a no option choice to drive my car in the arctic winters of Wisconsin(it runs really well...I put my hand on the stock intake and could hold it there). The roads are finally clear after the record "78 of snow so far this winter, but they are salty. Thankfully, I'm not driving in slush, but it's killing me that I have to drive it cause my other car is broken down. My paint is ok, it will make after about ten or so wax and details since I've owned it, but I'm wondering how long it will take for the salt to eat my chrome wheels. They've been polished and sealed with off the shelf products but I'm worried. I hope this is the right forum and chose it because I have an '87 Gt and know I've got plenty of fellow posters out there with great advice in this forum. Thanks.

i have no experience in snow driving, but i think that the best preventative maintenance you can do would be to wash at least the wheels if at all possible on a weekly basis. since its cold, get some piping hot water from the shower or sink to fill the wash bucket with. nothing dilutes salt like water!

Salt will start eating it only if you leave it there for an extended period of time, like all spring. I'm sure you wouldn't leave it there that long so you shouldn't have a problem. And as long as the entire wheel is plated, and no cracks in the plating, it shouldn't hurt.

Give'em a good cleaning[ mother's or Eagle one type, not the ammonia type] and coat of wax in the fall and you should make it to spring without any problem.

I've taken all your advice and was actually able to put the car back away again now that my daily diver is drivable again. The rims cleaned up just like you all said. thanks.
