First number (225 or 245 etc.) is tread width in millimeters.
Second number (45 or 40 etc.) is the aspect ratio, or the sidewall height as a percentage of the tread width. The higher the aspect ratio, the taller the sidewall (when compared for the same tread width).
Final number (17 or 18 etc.) is the wheel rim diameter required.

245 tread width (about 9-5/8") is wider than 225 (about 8-7/8"), so choosing between those two widths the 245s should go on the rear.

245's on the rear, they are wider. The three-digit numeric portion identifies the tire's "Section Width" (the distance from the beginning of the outer sidewall to the inner sidewall) in millimeters. Typically following the three digits identifying the tire's Section Width in millimeters is a two-digit number that identifies the tire's profile or aspect ratio (the length of the sidewall). The higher the number, the taller the sidewall; the lower the number, the lower the sidewall. A letter that identifies the tire's internal construction follows the two digits used to identify the aspect ratio. If you have high performance tires they might have a speed rating represented by a letter that would come before the "aspect ratio", like Z rated tires (high speed).
