You can run either without lowering your car. 17" wheels came standard with about a million GT's, and are easy to find used and often still shod with good tires.
18" wheels work fine (my car uses them, hit my profile gallery for pics).
In general terms, you can run up to 10.5" wide wheels on the back.
I'd recommend running 8.5 or 9" front and back, that way you can still do a full tire rotation.
Using the stock GT 17" wheels will allow you to do most brake upgrades, too. Some oversided brake upgrades will require 18" wheels.
