Default 17, 18 or 20" wheels?

I've got an '05 GT with stock bullitt-style wheels (photos in my profile). I haven't made any mods, but I'm looking into a suspension kit that would lower it about 1" and a slightly bigger wheel... I'm thinking 18".

What can I expect to change with a larger wheel? Apart from the looks, I figure the ride will be a little stiffer, but handling may improve?

Looking through the forums, I've seen a lot of people going with 18x10 in the rear and 18x9 in the front, so I'm leaning toward doing the same. I'd like to get some Bullett-style, but all chrome, so any suggestions along those lines would be much appreciated.

Finally, is there a benefit to going to 20"?

18" for sure. Much better choice than 17" or 20". Especially considering that you'll be getting a lowering kit.

Also, the largest benefit to 20" is that they sometimes look better. However, they always reduce ride quality and performance and can sometimes look "blingish".

Thanks for the reply. That pretty much confirms it. I agree about the "blingish" factor of 20-inchers.

One additional question. If I increase the wheels to 18" will I need to upgrade the brakes as well?

I dont remember where (maybe in Mustang Monthly),
but I read that the perfect
wheel diameter for a 05+ Mustangs
is 19''...

go with the 20" wheel some of these people forget that the saleen now come with 20". also if its a weekend car with some power nitto makes a drag radial. 17" and 18" are to small.

i personally think that those 20's look too big on mustangs. but its your choice. however, dont even think about nitto drag radials if your car is a daily driver. you will be so sorry you did when it comes time to buying new tires after just 10,000 miles or less.

personally id go with 18's. 17 look to small for a mustang and really dont fill up the wheel well leaving a big gap which doesnt look right. 18's are big enough to fill this gap and make it look good especially if you are going to lower it. 20's are too big for a mustang. they look out of place and a mustang isnt the car for 20's.

That's a very good point. 20" don't have any rubber on them when it comes to Stangs.
