Default does anyone have some advice on rim/tire sizes for a 65 coupe?

hello all,
can someone help me spoil my son further this Christmas? i'd like to get him a set of rims and tires for his "65 work in progress". he has his heart set on cragar s/s rims. ( i have no issue with that, since that's what i had as a kid )... my main concern is clearance and rubbing. the car is stock, suspension-wise. i'm looking at 15x7 front and back (i think the offset says 3, but i'm not too sure on that). bfg radial t/a's ....235/60/15 front 255/60/15 back. at this point, it's more of a cosmetic thing, than a need due to performance, but he wants that nice, aggressive stance like we all do. question is ...how does this set-up sound? pretty sure it will fit with no modification? could i / should i go fatter?
thanks in advance for your time and thoughts!!!

Those tire sizes are going to be trouble in a 65. I have a 66 with pretty much stock suspension and have 225/45/17 in front and 245/45/17 in the rear. I now wish I had done 235 in the rear as I occassionally get a little chirp from the rear when the bumps are just right. The front is perfect at 225, but 235 there would almost certain rub when turning. BTW the BS on my TTII 17x7 fronts is 4 inches and 17x8 rear with 5 inch BS. With only a 3 inch BS the wheels are going to stick out too far. All this is compounded by the fact that your tires with the 60 profile are going to stand taller

thanks...that starts me off with good info...so it sounds like the tires are too wide. he's wanting to go with 15" rims, do you think the 15x7s will work clearance-wise with narrower tires, say 215f, 235r?

Yes, the 15x7 would work fine with a 215 or 225 - 235 would fit too but would stick out from the rim a bit. Check out this website where you can see how the different wheels and tire look in profile. This site is also great for getting an idea of the height of various tires. I believe the original tires on 65-66 were about 25.5 inches tall

Here is a pic of a friend car (very similar to mine) who is running 225/50/16 front and 245/50/16 rear on a 66. A real nice "rake" and as I said, 225 in the front is the limit without fender mods. Wouldn't hurt to roll the rear fenders with 245 either. I'm sure you boy is going to be thrilled. Keep in mind you are talking about 10mm diff between 225 and 235 - a tiny bit.

man oh man you and your buddy have got a couple of beautiful mustangs! that shot of your friend's looks like the tire set up my son would love. looks like i need to go to 50 series to drop the over all height. thanks for the pic, maybe i can find a 245/50/15. havent seen one in bfg radial t/a, but i'm sure someone makes a good one.
thanks!!

Yea, I think 60 series is the limit on raised lettering on most brands - kind of a bummer. Good luck
