MY wife has a 2003 conv. that she just loves. We live in chicago and bought it used with 245-40-18 tires with a VERY non-aggressive tread, it is almost un-drivable in the winter. My son has her old car 2000 CRV and is away at college, since he is at college we have a limited budget. I want to put 205-70-15 snow tires on it I'm looking for cheap wheels and having trouble finding them. Will this help and will it work. She's talking about getting rid of it and it would kill her to have to do so. Please help
i have studded rears only. i slide a little bit.of course i have all season in the front. so far in the the snow i just take my time and avoid hills. PS breaking well before you have too is IMPORTANT! and if possiable tell your wife that the you cant scare the light by crusing right up to it.

I wouldn't worry about cheap wheels and 15's, they always look crappy. Bought the wife a '09 Flex with 19's, can't find a descent 18" winter wheel this time of year so I'm doing Pirelli Ice and Snow's in the factory sizes. Since you're on a limited budget, grab the buy and sell or bargain finder, start shopping for used winters.
If you're just doing the rear, match the current size, hopefully the tread depth would be similar. If you can do all four, you've got a variety of sizes that will work all between 25.7" (current height) to 27".
There's always bargains to be found, worth a search IMO.

When driving in snow and ice you should have good winter tires all around. I have seen tires with tread pattern like goodyear gs-d3 with M+S marking, that is mission impossible! There are good ones also but M+S or allseason mark on tire wall doesn't mean it works on snow they can be dangerous. Studs are very good idea fi they are allowed.
Get 16" wheels they should be easier to find and 205/60-16 winter tires. Nokian or Continental are the best winter tires.

You can say that again. I had the GS D3's and once it hit 40 degrees or below on dry pavement it was like ice. I cant imagine snow.
Chinese tires are invading in Europe and they are gaining popularity for dirt cheap price. They are ok on dry conditions. But it seem that while they usually copy tread patterns from better known tires, they are also putting every side wall marking that there are! That is a big problem to a not so aware customer who trusts these marking. I hope tires shops do not market them for winter use!
