Default Breaking on snow with mustang.

Hi,
I was driving my mustang on a bad snow day and I notice that my rear will fishtail a bit while breaking, I'm not talking to bring it to full stop but to slow down a bit, still in gear. in engine break is ok, go neutral and break slowly will not fish tail. Why was this happing? What is the best way to break safely with a rear wheel drive, this is my first winter with it. I would like any input and advise from you guys thank you.

Considering that I dont know what year your car is... do you have rear pads or shoes? And what condition are they in. I've noticed that if you have drums... and you use cheap brake shoes they tend to lock up a little bit easier in the cold. Also, if your rear tires aren't good it will cause it to slide as well.
