Default Tire & Rim Sizing

I'm thinking about new rims and tires for my '06 GT, and I've settled on 18" rims with 255/45R18 tires. The problem I have now is rim width. For these tires the minimum width is 8", and maximum is 9.5". If I had to choose between either 8" or 9.5", which will look better? I've seen cars on the road (usually low riders) that have rims way too wide for the tires, and I'm nervous that if I get a 9.5" rim it'll look goofy like those low riders. But on the other hand if I go with an 8" rim then I won't have the option of wider rear tires in the future.

If anyone else is driving on 255/45R18's I'd love to see how they look! And how wide are your rims?

I ran these 255/45/18 on 18x9's(AR Redlines) beginning of last summer. The wheel offset on 18's can also change the width effect on the rears. The ride was excellent with this tire and wheel combo.

I have AmericanMussle chrome bullitts on the front 18/9s and 255/45/18s They look good you won't have anything to worry about at 18/9.5. What wheels are you looking at?

Im running a 9.5 in the back with a 295 tire and it looks just tucked in or even with the fender-well.... so you will be fine!

check my gallery to see how the 9.5 in the back fits if you like to give you an idea.... but note that my left tire in those pics was sticking out a tad bit as i had not adjusted my panhard bar cuz i was too tired that day.

I don't see any issues with running a 9.5" wheel. I run a 10" in back with 295-45s.

POCO, that's a beautiful pony!!

Ok, it sounds like what I was trying to ask was misunderstood. I didn't mean that I was afraid of the wheels sticking out past the fender, or other clearance issues. What I meant is if I stick a tire as skinny as a 255 on a 9.5" rim, will the width of the tire at the lip of the rim be noticeably wider than the tread width (as if the tire had to be spread apart to keep its bead seal)? I don't expect it to be a problem, but it would really suck to pick out rims and tires and then not like them!

By the way... tirerack.com has a really sweet deal on Goodyear Eagle F1 285/40ZR18's right now!

Your talking about the section width of the tire of that 255 on a 9.5" rim. Yes, the width of the rim will spread the section width of the tire. Here is a link to the BFG site. There, you can cross reference tires and recommended rim width's.I hope this helps.(You'll have to open up the link larger in the upper right hand corner)

I grant, I am running 20's with 255/35ZR20 front & 275/35ZR20 rear tires, but my wheel width is 9.5 and I do not believe my car looks funny or like a low rider, what do you thing?
