Wider tires help give you traction because you have more friction keeping the tires stuck rather than spinning. The advantages are felt more in ambient temperatures, not rain, mud, snow, or ice. I have heard (this isn't personal experience) that adding wider tires to a vehicle that doesn't need them not only slows it down due to weight, but also the added force necessary to turn them increases.
