Default need assistance,re-clearcoating wheels?

going to use,dupli-color wheel clear paint [spray on]
i am a pretty good painter,BUT.
my a.r shelby razors look great, but i guess i have been to anal with cleaning them every day and it seems i may have wore throught the clear coat in area's on the polished aluminum lip area. [not the painted spoke area's]dont know if i'm explaining this right? looks discolored in area's i wore off the clearcoat, mostly on the curved part, where paint thickness is usually thinner, understand? i tried to polish, lite compound, nothing worked [i thought at first it was a stain]
i am going to tape off the wheel really good, scuff up the entire wheel lip [to make sure new clear grabs] finally the question !
do i have to remove all the old clearcoat? its not chipped,i literally rubbed through from over cleaning i think if i just scuff up the entire area i will re-clear,it should come out perfect, right!?
any pro painters advice?
thank you scott

ok,i did it! took a couple hours, and my arm hurts from sanding!
yes you have to remove all old clear coat, used 1000 wet o dry, taped everything ,and started spaying.
used duplicolor clear wheel spray. works very well!
very happy with the results
