Id say 275 is the max. I have 275 40 17 on my stocks for the track, but their is a good amount of sidewall slope aka buldge. It does not look good but it works amzing on the street and thats what i wanted.

I would be amazed if you found a reputable tire/rim shop that would install anything larger than 255's on the stock 17 inch rims- that is the widest tire that can be safely installed on that rim. Anything wider is asking for trouble.
We used to bulge the hell out of the sidewalls in the 70's, but it is jsut not done anymore (and for good reason).
This might help,
put in the tire sizes you want and the stock tire sizes, and the graph will show you how far the tire will stick out in MM.
add your rim offset and it will move the center point of the rim...
Calculators:
This is a Microsoft Excel Worksheet the calculates Rear End Gear changes and there effects to RPM and Speed. Also there is a calculator that will assist you in selecting the correct Tire size for your car including what Wheel and Tires combo will fit.
I was considering 275's on stock 17's also. I had a bit of a spinout with my new 4.10's and think I need a bit more rubber on the road so I can stay on it. But it seems like that might not be such a hot idea. So should I go for the rim & tire upgrade or just drive like miss daisy?
Have any of you guy bought Wheels and or tires from OC out of Florida . They have a auction going all the time on e-bay . How good is this stuff ? I guess the question is are the wheels they sell any good ( alot cheaper )
I have the 255's on mine thats also dropped 1.5". I think that if I went any wider they would stick out and not look so good.
Remember, tire performance (safety) is more important than the looks. Lateral traction (handling) is compromised if the sidewall angle is too far off. Check the recommendation from the manufacturer or Tire Rack to see what range of rim width is needed for the tire of your choice.
